How can you find the birth certificate or death certificate for someone?
-
I am trying to find the birth and death certificate of someone I am researching. I know their full name, and the name of their mother. I know the year of birth and the estimated time of death for one of them. I know the year of birth and the date of death for the other. They are siblings so either birth certificate would be great. Is there a site that would allow me to view the birth certificate. I know ancestry.com could provide this information however the year of birth is earlier than the years they have on record. Also I do know where one of them died, but his death does not show on ancestry.com. I have attempted the use of rootsweb but no luck with that. Please help.

Answer:
All of this is governed by state laws. I don't know of any site that has birth certificates. I know for Texas, FamilySearch.org, has a pilot program with original Texas Death Certificates through 1976 that are listed with the state's Bureau of Vital Statistic. You really gave no idea as to the time frame you are talking about. Release of these records are protected by state laws as there can be an invasion of privacy and risk of identity theft. Each state has its own laws. Also many states did not issue vital records until the first part of the 20th century. Texas started in 1903 but still until after WW2, a lot of people who were born at home or died at home did not get recorded. My own parents born in 1907 and 1908 respectively had to get delayed birth certificates when time came for them to draw Social Security. Ancestry.Com does not have birth certificates. They do have indexes to birth and death records of many states but you cannot view the certificates themselves. Edit: Here is a link to FamilySearch's org pilot program. http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#c=1320964;p=2;t=searchable

out of curiousity... can you edit the question to give the names? I had lines in Lamar county, and might have bumped into them in my work. In fact, I just now finished scanning the 1860 land grant for my ancestor Henry Fullingim that was there. And.. we might be able to pick up other info for you. I use the same pilot program.. tip... click on record pilot... then fill in the name.. and state.. don't try to use the dates. When you get your results.. at the top, you will see "collections"... which is where you can filter the results. This site is a gold mine, but it does take some playing to work with. If you find your death certs (also census), notice that you can both zoom in.. and you can save it. You just need to add the .jpeg on the end of the file.

Texas didn't begin issuing birth certificates until around 1903 (disclaimer - I believe these dates are accurate, this used to be easier to look confirm before current "birth certificates" events), so you won't find birth certificates for either family member. Texas Death information: http://www.deathindexes.com/texas/index.html http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/VS/reqproc/deathcert.shtm You can poke around some of these links to see if you can find alternative records. Perhaps newspaper, obits, cemeteries, probate, or church records will help.
