How can I find living relatives from Glasgow, Scotland?
-
I am a descendant of John McKnight who lived around Aikenhead Road in the Govanhill district of Glasgow during the first half of the 20th Century. John and his wife, Jean, had two sons - James and Robert McKnight. James was my great-grandfather who immigrated to the US in the 1920s. Robert remained in Scotland. I would love to know if I have any living McKnight relatives who possibly still reside in Glasgow or elsewhere in Scotland. Is it possible to find out?

Answer:
There's quite a bit of information available using online phone books. Searching for McKnight in Glasgow comes up with a considerable list of names: http://www.thephonebook.bt.com/publisha.content/en/find/residential/residential_numbers.publisha?SearchType=res&PCD=&REQ=20&RNG=&PageBeginCount=1&Paging=N&PageResultType=subscribe&Searched=Y&NAM=mcknight&GIV=&LOC=glasgow&STR=&x=0&y=0&AdImage=test2.gif&PreviousLocation=glasgow The postcode for Govanhill is G42 or G44 and if you narrow down your search to look for only people in those areas it comes up with one name - John McKnight. This man lives a short walk from Aikenhead Road and may well be related. It may also be a coincidence given the fact these are fairly common names and Govanhill has been a fairly deprived area that's seen a lot of immigration and migration over the past 100 years. There's an address there, so I'd definetly say it's worth dropping him a line! http://www.thephonebook.bt.com/publisha.content/en/find/residential/residential_numbers.publisha?SearchType=res&PCD=&REQ=20&RNG=&PageBeginCount=1&Paging=N&PageResultType=subscribe&Searched=Y&NAM=mcknight&GIV=&LOC=g44&STR=&x=0&y=0&AdImage=test2.gif&PreviousLocation=g44 There are also McKnights in this area on www.192.com. This service provides access to electoral roll info as well as phone book entries. You have to pay to access much of the info but you may think it's worth it! Good luck!

One thing you can try. Rootsweb has message boards. You can go under Scotland and post a message. I have received some good results from the Message Boards for USA locations. In some places there are people monitoring the boards that will try to help. Rootsweb is free and when you post it on the Rootsweb message board it will show up on the Ancestry.Com Message board also.

You could send a letter to the letters section of one or more of the daily newspapers in Glasgow saying you would like to contact any relatives. Also you could look up the white pages for British Telecom and write to any McKnights in the Govanhill area.
