Can you naturally have twins if none of your family (ancestors) have ever had twins?
-
I was wondering if it was possible because i have heard that twins skip a generation and that you can't have twins unless someone before you, like your great-grandparents... or aunts or great-great-grandparents... have had twins. But, i have also heard that it doesnt matter... that you have just as good of a chance than if someone in your family has had twins.

Answer:
They tend to run in families, but not always. "None of your ancestors" implies you got back to 1400 AD, which would take 30 - 40 years of concentrated research.

that means that the very first human had to be a twin.

yep, happened to my parents. Also your risk for twins is much higher after age 35 regardless of whether or not twin births run your family. Another quick fact, scientists believe that as many as 1 in 8 pregnancies began as twins and that one of the embryos were reabsorbed by the body way before birth.

Twins are a lot more common than we think, it's just the ones that survive that we see. Up to 1/10 of pregnancies began as twins but just as miscarriages are naturally quite common, many of the twins do not survive. This is confirmed by disappearing babies in ultrasounds. It could be that you yourself are a twin but your sibling didn't make it to the outside.Of course there will be some families that don't have a lot of twins and those where the twins don't usually both survive, just as there are families which traditionally have twins, meaning the twins survive more commonly than in the other families. Your ancestors going back to great-great-grandparents is 15 couples, and when I added the live children of mine it was 88 that I know about, which is about the rate of twins like 1 in 90 or so, i think, so it is quite likely one of your recent ancestors did have surviving twins.

Yes, you can have twins even if none of your known ancestors had twins. However, the liklihood of having twins improves if your immediate ancestors had twins.
