I'm trying to get for info about my great grand father, who passed away. I have his sss number. I was wondering how to get more info about him? Another thing I saw some info about him on those ancestry.com but it didn't list race. How do I get a copy of his certificate?

Answer:
1) Go to the Social Security Death Index (SSDI) <>http://ssdi.rootsweb.com> 2) Enter the Social Security Number in the correct field. 3) Submit. 4) Verify the Name and other information in the results. 5) Under "Tools" select the link to "SS-5 Letter". This will bring up a form for "Social Security Number Record Third Party Request for Photocopy".* 6) Sign the pre-printed form and send it along with $27 to the Social Security Administration. The copy of the Social Security application that you will receive can be very helpful and informative. *Note: There is also a shopping cart icon this page under "Order Record". Clicking this link will show you how to obtain a death certificate through VitalChek/Ancestry.com. Alternative sources for Death Certificates are the Vital Records offices for the state and county of death. This is probably the cheaper (though less convenient route). The Social Security Application may give you more accurate information than the Death Certificate simply because it is a Primary Source rather than a Secondary Source. Your grandfather would have filled out his own SS# Application; while his next of kin would have given the information for the Death Certificate.

Best method we found was to visit the local historical society of the county he was born in or resided in. They will generally be able to look up a birth and death certificate and possibly look at census records that record country of origin if he emigrated to the us. Some also maintain ships records so you can look up what ship your ancestors came over on and who came over with them. There may be a daily fee to use the facilities but it usually is not very much and the people there are extremely knowledgeable and helpful.
