(UK) How can i find out who lived in a house in 1921?
-
On the marriage record which i know for certain is that of my great-grandparents, it says where they live, as i dont know where my great-grandmother was born, where she lived is the only real reliable evidence i have No matter how many census records i look up i cannot find out for certain which is definatly of my great-grandmother. However if i can find out who lived in 41 Argyle street, Hebburn, Durham in 1921 i can delve further, any tips?

Answer:
It may be worth checking electoral registers for 1921 if they still exist. They will not list everyone in the house, but certainly the adults who were able to vote. You can then see whether the surname is the same as your ancestor's. Do make enquiries at Durham Record Office (see link below) which has local electoral registers on microfilm This answer was provided by Enquire, a 24-hour, live question answering and enquiry service offered by public librarians across England and Scotland in collaboration with partners in the United States. One serious point to make is that house names in the early years were by no means fixed. Many people have people in the census who were recorded at one house number in one census, but another ten years later. It doesn't mean that the family moved to a different house in the same street, it just means that the houses were renumbered as the streets around it took shape and more homes were erected. In the same vain, it is worth rememembering that World War 2 has also got in the way since the 1920s and the houses may have been bombed, destroyed or redeveloped in the years since. Quite a few of the places my ancestors lived in the 19th century are no longer standing today. That though is not your question. You don't want to know what the place is like now, you're interested in what it was like then, and in which case the local studies reference department of the nearest large library should be able to help you out. The documents most likely to be of help are the Electoral Roll which are arranged by address rather than surname. Most libraries keep a pretty good stock of the 20th century editions, it's only the earlier registers pre-1880 that are sometimes patchy with gaps in years. It's worth baring in mind though that women didn't get the vote until quite late, and even in the 1920s I don't think all women had the vote, just some of them. True 'universal' suffrage didn't come in till quite late in the 1920s I think, though I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong! The point is, that the electoral roll only includes people eligible to vote, which also means that it won't include any names of children in the house either. You may have to wait another ten years or so for the 1921 census to be released to get a proper answer to your question, but for now, the librarian at Durham Library will probably be your best friend.

I have a copy of last year's Electoral Roll (INFO Disc) on my computer and have checked that for residential addresses in Argyle Street, Hebburn. As someone has mentioned already, the area may have been the victim of the Blitz or of modernisation. There are no private residential addresses for that street now, apart from caretakers at a school house.. The other buildings are all Local Authority - Social Services and Educational.

I would find the church nearest to the house in question and ask them for help. Sometimes they have the address especially if the person in question had a church position. Church records direct are often overlooked but I have found that they can be very helpful when it comes to something like this. Good Luck! The History Man http:www.footnote.com

The 1911 census is on line so I would start with that between 1911 and 1921 I would use the electoral roll which you should be able to view via the local Library or Records office, Hope this helps
