Where does the surname Umba originate?

if you found this in a posted "family tree", you would have to contact the person owning it. I've seen trees that use the abbreviation of UNK or MNU... which happens to mean UNKNOWN..or MAIDEN NAME UNKNOWN. And people looking for that "last name". So, WHO did the "genealogy"?? And..our mantra around here... did you validate it by using ORIGINAL records? If you get the original record, it might explain what is going on, and if it is or isn't actually the surname. edit happy to be corrected, so I went over to familysearch.org to see what it has. I see a number of them with the name..picked a male born in 1850s in Conn., then looked to see his parents place of birth (actually the father) and he gives father born in Germany. That's a quick scan clue..not definitive. You don't mention your location of records (glad they are real)...but can you look to records in the time frame, other than church? Tax records, electoral, so forth? I'd be hunting a male with the name, to see if there are some valid documents hinting at an immigration. more went to the original familysearch http://www.familysearch.org/eng/ since it has the igi which is of use sometimes... gives 2 entries for Wertemberg as origin in 1880 census.
