How do I create a family tree form online?

How do you adapt a family tree to show divorce/remarriage?

  • I want to try and start a family tree. My grandmother was divorced, and then remarried. How would I show this in a family tree? Also, I want to create a form that will ask my family members to tell about their lives so that I can create a book about all of us. It will allow my grandparents to fill out the information they know about their parents and family that has passed. Does anyone have a good form for this? Or can they point me in the right direction?

There are many visual ways to show more than one marriage, in a chart form. The problem with decorative "trees" (using the term loosely) is that they can be very time consuming. Most researchers who accumulate a lot of information wind up using a genealogy program, which is set up to deal with all those persons. The LDS church offers Personal Ancestral file for free, via website, www.familysearch.org. It remains a standard... you can include pics, etc. Almost all the standard programs offer "gedcom" ability... that is, transfer the facts to a file that is interchangeable with other genealogy programs. thus, if you really got hooked and decided that you want/ need a fancier program (read, buy it), you just transfer what you have to the new one. Another standard is called a family group sheet... which lists husband, wife, and children, and includes a space for the parents of each spouse.. linking back to the prior generation. YOu would do a separate fgs for each marriage, but in the program, they would "link". These are just the basic facts... not so much as a biography type thing, which gives more of a personal touch. You may want to drop by www.cyndislist.com, which has a huge collection of genealogical resources, including tutorials on starting research, myths and hoaxes to avoid, etc. http://www.cyndislist.com/beginner.htm

When you show it on paper it looks like grandmother (name) = first husband (name) - children (if any) year of birth - children = second husband (name) - children etc.

Are you talking about in a genealogy program? If so, what program. If you're just talking about on paper just list it as a 2nd marriage with all his info

you put 1st husband with symbol for divorce in one side then add the second husband to the other side with wife . Leaving enough space for next generation.

She'll just have two marriage lines with a mark across the one which ended in divorce. Children from each marriage will be placed in between her and their respective fathers.

i use family treemaker program - you have to buy it. It will show all the records you input & generate trees, reports & even a book - also you can add pictures, etc. the form you mention to give to family members to fill out is called a pedigree sheet or chart. for the story book - choose a theme such as school memories, childrens games how they met their spouse travel/migration what life was like 50 years ago obstacles they overcame careers, college, leaving home, parental relationships, raising kids, traditions - christmas, thanksgiving, birthdays, etc regrets, mistakes and milestones. be sure and ask for copies of old photos & the story about the photo.
