Is it possible to find out who called you?

Anyone find me a woman who lived between 1200 and 1500 called Hildegard, (Who isn't Hildegard von Bingen?)?

  • I am part of a reenactment group, we all have characters who are real people who lived during that time. They can't be in any royal families (but they can be linked to them). Any country. I really like the name Hilda and I want to find a real medieval woman who existed in that time. I've been searching on the internet but I cant find any resources that allow me to search records of families of that time simply by the first name. Or perhaps you know of a comprehensive online database where you can search by first name? And don't say Hildegard von Bingen, As awesome as she is my character is not nun-like. :P xxx

there is a simple answer... In THAT TIME FRAME, there were NO RECORDS of persons kept. There can be stories or traditions, most normally of men (royalty more likely) but not women.

Go to http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi Scroll PAST the ads. (They rotate. Some ask for a name and take you to a pay site.) Enter given name, birth year 1480, year range +/- 20. (1460 - 1500) Press "Search". Reduce age range to 1440, keep year range +/-20. (1420 - 1460) Press "Search". Repeat until you find someone you like. Note that going back that far is chancy; the data may or may not be accurate. You could check the boxes "Has notes" and "Has Sources". That usually clears some of the clutter. If the source is "smith.ged" or "smith.ftw" (or any other ---.ged or ----.ftw) it is basically worthless. There are no civil records that far back, save for wills. Church records would be reasonable.
