What is the origin of France?

Im Puerto Rican, my last name origin is Spain and France ?

  • ok so my last name is Felix. I'm Puerto Rican, ok so we all know Puerto Ricans are a mixture of Spanish, Black, and Native blood. obviously majority of Puerto Ricans last names come from a Spanish ancestor. how ever my last name also comes from France, i have heard that a few french have immigrated to Puerto Rico awhile back as well just not as much as the Spanish. However the Spanish spells my last name like Félix, the accent over the E. and the French spells it withouth it which is how my family originally spells is. Is it possible my families ancestors were french? how do i find out? or could our last name just change a little over the centuries to become Americanized?

  • Answer:

The fact that it's with or without the accent doesn't really matter, because it could've lost it through the years. In Spain there are a lot of people that are Jiménez and another bunch of people in smaller amount that are Giménez. It is clear that they're the same name in origin. The same with yours. Felix is a last name original from Aragon region, in northern Spain. It expanded through the whole Crown of Aragon and small part of that territory (Roussillon) became part of France in 1659 after a war that France won over Spain. That might be the reason why there are people with that last name in France.

"we all know".... No, we don't. Every person, PR or otherwise, is a distinct person with their own explicit ancestry. It is POSSIBLE they are that mix, but not guaranteed. Like MANY last names...your name can come from a number of places. Regardless of the spelling, since spelling has nothing to do with the origins of a PERSON. You find out if your ancestors were French (or anything else) by researching THEM. If gr grandpa Felix was born in Germany, he was German. Plain and simple. Surname "origins" are simplistic, generic, and prove nothing. They cannot always be proven. Your ancestors CAN be proven, by using documents and records.

If you want to know where your ancestors came from, you will have to do the research. Felix Name Meaning and History Spanish (Félix), Portuguese, English, German, and Jewish (Ashkenazic): from a medieval personal name (Latin Felix, genitive Felicis, meaning ‘lucky’, ‘fortunate’). This was a relatively common Roman family name, said to have been first adopted as a nickname by Sulla. It was very popular among early Christians and was borne by a large number of early saints. Dictionary of American Family Names, Oxford University Press, ISBN 0-19-508137-4 Immigrants to the US came from Spain, Italy, France, Sweden, Switzerland, Russia, Hungary, Bohemia, Holland and Bohemia.
