How do I go about getting adoption records?

How would I go about getting my adoption records in a state (IL.) that has closed adoption records?

  • I'm born in Illinois and adopted. Illinois is one of very few states that will not allow adoptee's the right to their adoption records. To get help from a geneological society I have to be able to tell them my parents names, which I can't get without my adoption record.

  • Answer:

post to reunion sites with your bday and such and see if there is anyone looking for you. ask your adoptive parents for additional info. Some services gave background info on the child's family. If you can get the birthdate, adoption date and place, family history of medical and any other hints. Remember the birth parents may not want contact with you. They may be in a point of life where they are in a relationship that has no idea you exist. They may not be very fit. There could be half siblings or even full siblings.
