How do I find out what my last name means?

  • I'd like to find out what my Mom's maiden name means and also my Dad's. Both are unique and are from Belguim and Ukraine. Are there any sites that you can direct me too that has more then names like "smith". Thanks for all your help!

www.cyndislist.com has loads of resources, broken down by topic and locality. Check out what she shows for Belgium, as well as what she has for Ukraine. This is an excellent way to network with persons working those localities, and can be very knowledgeable. And btw... even those with "common" names are not always accurate. Many people here try two or three different sites, and find each site offers a different meaning. Gentle hint.. don't assume that a name has a meaning.
