Where does my surname come from?

The surname Galette, where did it come from?

  • There are less than 200 people in the US with that surname. More than 50% are African American. The word galette is actually an italian food. Since Italians didn't migrate in significant numbers to this country anywhere near the time slaves were freed and given last names. I am not being racially insensitive here at all, just very curious about this. I can't find where the surname originated anywhere online (assuming Italy but idek) Anyone know where it came from and why so many AA have it (compared to European Americans)?

  • Answer:

The earliest records I have found are 1600s and all French.............

I have no idea where your source is for current statistics, that many AA have this name. I can tell you where to find historical records...www.familysearch.org will have census records from prior to 1930. Freed former slaves took names after emancipation, by their choice. Sometimes the name was their prior "owner", but not always. You are also ASSUMING that any caucasian with the name has roots in Italy, which is nothing more than a guess. It is completely possible that they have a name which evolved from something else..ie Gillette. This is very common. I find only 18 persons in the social security death index with the name..and remember that the females there would generally have the name through marriage. The bottom line is that EACH PERSON with the name is an individual, who may/may not have Italian ancestry, or may/may not be African American. You have to learn the specific ancestry for any person, to determine their origins (and not by surname).

Galette immigrants in the 1920 census were born in Italy, Greece, Canada and Puerto Rico. All were listed as white except one mulatto couple. There are a few in the passenger lists from Sweden, France, Italy.
