How to find free public records online?

  • I am planning an family reunion the first for my family and I am trying to find out how who my great grandmother and great great grandmother is. No one that I have talked to knows who they are but I have a maiden name but we are not sure if its right. How can I find out about one black slave (my great great grandmother) and my great grandmother? I don't have any money and I am not close to where they was born to visit the courthouse. Is there a website thats really free?

You are needing historical records, not "public" records, which if googled, will give you something else entirely. POST THE NAMES and approx dates, places..and you'll get some help. However, some understanding of history... if gr gr grandma was born into slavery, she had no maiden name.
