How do i legally change my last name?

  • Ok so im 18 and i have a baby on the way, now i hate my last name because i just do for personal reasons. Ive always had problems with my last name and i don't want my baby to have the same plus nothing goes with it. So i wanna change my last name on my birth certificate my social security and my texas license before the baby gets here so i can put mine and the baby's last name as my mothers maiden last name. how do i legally go by this? where do i have to go and what do i have to do?

  • Answer:

You need to go to your City or County registrars office and file an application (and pay a fee). You then need to follow a long procedure. In the end you will get a legal declaration stating that you are now known as "new name" but your birth certificate will never change because that is the name that you were given at that point in time. You will then need to change your name on every legal document that you own - social security card, etc. Additionally, you will always have to present your birth certificate and the document which grants you the new name for anything that you need to do - get a passport, drivers license, etc. The truth is you will never really escape your birth name. Think it over & good luck.
