How do I find what my name means?

Is there a website where I can find out what my last name means? If so, what is it?

  • So yeah.. any website that you know of that's reliable would be nice =) also if you just know what the name Poetz means you could say that, although I doubt ne one will

  • Answer:

Hi Ashley, I took a look at Ancestry.com and looked at the New York Passenger Lists 1820-1957 and found that nearly all Poetz immigrants listed their place of origin as Germany or Prussia. There were a couple listed as being from France. I also looked at the census records and it seems that most of the foreign born people named Poetz were from Germany. If you go to the Mormons website at www.familysearch.org you will see that their information seems to support these facts. I went to freetranslation.com and their doesn't seem to be a literal meaning for Poetz. German family names most often derive from given names, occupational designations, bodily attributes or geographical names. Hyphenations notwithstanding, they mostly consist of a single word; in those rare cases that the family name is linked to the given names by particles such as von or zu, they usually indicate noble ancestry. I hope this helps

You can try ancestery.com. I think that you could find out from them. Most of it is free, but they want you to pay for a year if you need to know about relatives, etc. Good luck!

hi, Ashley... One place I use a lot is rootsweb.com, and their family files.. I checked and find many entries for your name. Some could be related to you, but that is something you would not know for sure, unless you did some research on exactly who your ancestors were. What I did see is that some people have found the name in both Germany, and Luxembourg..and even one in Italy. As for the reliability of the website where you can look up a "meaning".. I am not a huge fan of those. Anyone can "pull" up the more common names. When a name comes from a European country with a different language, the focus needs to be there. And simply put, I don't think all names HAVE a "meaning". They are labels, that come from a variety of sources. www.cyndislist.com has lots of resources, including how to start tracing your family. When you find your ancestor's origins, you will then know what country and language to be asking about. Good luck!

First, there are only a few Surname dictionaries online. "Poetz" is not in any that I looked in. The first thing that comes to mind is that, if you are in the US, this surname may have been assigned to one of your relatives if they were immigrants that came into Staten Island. I know a few people whose names changed dramatically when this happened. If this is possibly the case, I would try to talk to relatives, if this is possible. I'm not sure where your heritage hails from...but, I would guess that it is related to "poets"...just a thought. Good luck!
