How can I find out the names of my great great grandfather's parents?

How can i find out my grandads parents names?

  • i know my grandad was called derrick c j chick born in kingston london 1929 and died in Malta 1989. i cant find a death certificate or his parents names other than his mums maiden names was baverstock. is there anyway i can continue tracing them?

  • Answer:

Couldn't find father. ancestry.com says his mother was Anna M. Burden from Shaftesbury District and he was born in the Kingston District. He was born in 1929 in October, November, or December. In 1952 he married a woman whose maiden name was Epps. In 1983 he married a woman last name Kirkham in Kent County. I suggest you write to whatever organization handles birth certificates for the Kingston District and ask for a copy.

As you say, he was born in 1929 and the birth registered in the Oct-Dec 1929 Kingston, Kent Vol. 2a Pg 687. Mother's maiden name Baverstock. A Malcolm T Chick was born in Islington 1927, maiden name of mother Baverstock, so reasonable to assume a brother of your grandfather. Emily Elizabeth Baverstock married Thomas P Chick in Islington in 1923 (Apr-Jun Islington Middlesex Vol 1b Pg 296). Her parents were James John Baverstock and Alice Freeman. I found this information through Ancestry.co.uk. You can either follow it up using their free 14 day trial, or by accessing it free through a library. Incidentally, one of your relatives has a public tree on the site - contacting him/her might get you more information (although your grandfather is not included on the tree).

marriage certificates and baptism records often have more details on them. Also look for obituaries in newspapers and search passenger lists. Ancestry.com is a good starting place. You can join this free for 3 weeks or so. Begin a private member tree with you as a starting point and soon enough, you'll start getting leads. But go hard out at it for the free trial period and print out everything you got before the trial is up, because it is really expensive to join.
