Answer:
http://familytimeline.webs.com/originsofsurnames.htm read this which will explain a little more than I will write here..........your surnames do not really tell you where you came from........... we are lucky in Britain as we are an island and from primary school we know not only our own history but World history very well .........so you know that in 1066 the Normans ( French) conquered which brought in many French surnames...doesn't mean our ancestry is French, just the influence of the words and language and Britain spoke French for many years, records were in French ( and Latin) and even today our history is all around us including in our pockets ......The design of Britain's coinage is still based on the design of Roman coins. Some of the lettering is still in Latin. Look for D.G. which stands for Dei gratia, meaning 'by god's grace', and Regina, meaning 'queen'. Written around the edge of some £1 coins is a phrase from Vergil's Aeneid: 'decus et tutamen' which means 'glory and protection'. BUT surname origins are just for fun, it does not tell you where YOUR family came from for that you have to research and the website I gave you helps you do that if you want to page 2 and is UK/Irish based so you will get lots of help Lowin This interesting name is of Anglo-Saxon origin and derives from the Old English pre 7th Century personal name "Leofwine", which is composed of the elements "leof", dear, beloved and "wine", friend. The personal name is recorded before the Norman Conquest of 1066 as "Leofwin", "Lifwin" and "Leuuin", where the double "u" stands for "w". In Middle English the name became "Lefwine". This was the name borne by an English missionary who became the patron of Ghent, and the given name was consequently popular in England and the Low Counties during the Middle Ages. The surname development includes William Lowen (1275, Worcestershire), Roger Livene (1279, Cambridgeshire) and Robert Levene (1327, Essex). The modern surname can be found as "Lewin", "Lowin", and "Lowen", with the patronymic forms "Lewins", "Lewens", and "Livens". One Alice Lowen was christened on the 27th of January 1576 at St. John's, Hackney in London. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of John Lewyn, which was dated 1230, in the "Northamptonshire Pipe Rolls", during the reign of King Henry 111, known as "The Frenchman", 1216 - 1272. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Lowin immigrants came from England, Germany, Ireland, Denmark, Russia, Poland and Scotland. Just knowing where one surname came from will not tell you where all of your ancestors came from.
