How would you improve the city of Philadelphia?

Old City Directories listings in Philadelphia?

  • I'm going to try this again, seeing as when I posted this question last time people did not understand what I was asking. Thomas Timlin was my great-great-grandfather. He was born in December 1861 in Mayo Ireland. He immigrated in 1863. He married Mary Farrell in 1883 (probably in Philadelphia). They had 9 kids together. Cecelia, William, Lawrence, Catherine, Anna, Thomas, Bernard, Helen, and Andrew. Mary Farrell Timlin was born in 1863 and died when Andrew was 9 years old in 1912 in Philadelphia. Thomas had lived at 1429 South 29th Street for a lot of his life. When Thomas died other family members took over the house and lived in it. The Last person to live in the house that was a Timlin was Anna Timlin. She died around 8-10 years ago. I am looking for the City Directories on 1429 South 29th Street in Philadelphia. I think that City Directories is the right term. City Directories, Street Listings, whatever they are called. I would start looking at that house in around 1900 and look to see who lived there up until about 1995. I'm trying to find out when Thomas Timlin died because we do not have an approximate death date. He did not have a social security number. I know he would have died in Philadelphia and he would have been living in that house. Once again 1429 South 29th Street in Philadelphia PA. from 1900 - 1995. Thank you. I only had to post this question again because other people were not getting what I was trying to say. Thank you very much!

  • Answer:

There should be a collection of them, going back a long ways, in the special collections room of the Philidelphia Library. The library in my county has them going back to 1900 or so for its city; two branches in cities large enough to have had them have them for their city too. They won't be on-line, unless they have some VERY dedicated volunteers. Note that the data is about a year out of date; they collected it in, for instance, 1932 and the book came out January 1933, more or less.
