Where does my surname come from?

Where does my surname come from "Flavin" ?

  • My Mothers, Mother surname was Flavin - she kept the name of her Mother so Flavin is what I see myself as. Unfortunately my surname is not FLAVIN but I will be changing it by deed-pol to keep it going. Im not going to tell you where my grandmother comes from but I will say she moved to Wales in the late 30s early 40s I believe and worked as a nurse up untill she past away at the young age of 49 sadly. Id be really grateful and really appreciate if anyone can give me any insight on the FLAVIN surname and where it originates from. Thank you . Alan (Flavin:) well i will be soon ;)

  • Answer:

Just having a look at the Irish census it seem Kerry and Cork are the Counties where most Flavin's were....a few in Dublin and one or two in Wexford or Limerick.............but their are several pages of them. So it should be fairly easy to find her family. Do you know when she was born, if not her parents names or names of siblings she may have had? I am presuming you saying she moved in the 1930-1940s which is interesting, with World War 2 and Ireland remaining neutral many Irish moved to help the War effort and never returned, at that time because they were treated very badly by the irish authorities, refused help/support and treated badly by their neighbours (1922 separation still fresh in their minds) Not so long ago I did some memory boxes for a heritage centre in Ireland and during that research I heard many things about that 'moment in time'
