Is the name Mayden a male or female name?

Is Ruamy a male name? or a female name?

  • While doing some genealogy research, I came across an ancestor named "Ruamy". I have never seen that given name before. Is that a male name? Or a female name? (I can't tell if he/she is a great-aunt or a great-uncle -- many times removed.)

  • Answer:

Oh I love these old unusual names, it is sometimes found spelt Ruhamy....it is a female name and from it came several more modern names, although the ones I know are still very old...namely Amy, Emily and Ruby............ It is also the female version of Raham, a biblical character, who was a descendant of Caleb and Hezron, a son of Shema, and the father of Jorkeam. I have one or two old names I have never heard in my ancestry namely Annanais ( male and no idea where from) , Cossford ( female and from a surname) and Grantham ( male from a surname and that surname is from a town in Lincolnshire in England)

It is a female name and quite old, but I can only find it in the US, and a very few in Canada, back to the 17th century.

It's a female name, often nicknamed "Amy".
