do some geneological research...what nationality or race are they? use theme colors that match their lineage....Irish (green & white), Polish (red & white), African American (red, green black & yellow), Nordic or Hebrew (blue & white). incorporate some "tradition" into the ceremony---smashing wine glasses, jumping a broom, do some research depending on their background of what types of things were done at wedding ceremonies back in the day. Borrow lots of old pictures from the family (make copies and return them) and put together a collage---or if someone will do it for you--a video or powerpoint presentation that rolls through pictures automatically with music from the time they were gowing up, were dating, their first house, first car....etc. Invite some of your grandparents friends from their old neighborhood or high school to attend. ask members of your family to volunteer to pick-up the elders, bring them to the party and get them home safely. You'll be surprised of the great and funny stories these folks will tell you. ask someone in your family to volunteer to be the videographer and get some of these stories on tape. start making a list of the types of things you'll need....check the internet and sign up for mailings for coupons to help save on decorations, cups, plates, streamers, tablecloths, etc. Check the craft books at the library or at Michaels, JoAnn Fabrics, and other craft stores...Find a corner of the store where you can browse and take notes on things like party favors and decorating ideas. pre-wash and cut 12" squares of white cotton fabric. Iron them to freezer paper and provide a bunch of permanent markers. Have everyone draw a picture, or their hand, or a message on the fabric square and date it. ask your local fabric shop if they know a quilter who will help you put it together into a quilt for yoru grandparents. Keep your eyes and ears open when they talk about what they would like and try to arrange that for them. Good luck!

Let grandma in on the plans. What you think may be a cool idea may make Gram & Gramp uncomfortable.

We had my in-laws at a local VFW. Used their kitchen and had volunteers in the family to make and bring food (Keep it simple tho, it's easier). We had a beautiful cake from Wal-Mart with their wedding photo on top. Have a memory book with old photos brought by others and leave room for people to leave wishes and thoughts. Do you know who stood in the wedding? See if you can get the wedding party together. We had music on CD's and had some from their time and had them dance the first dance together. Take lots of photos and do a memory book for them of then and now. We did some research and also had some then and now comparisons. (cars, food, homes) HAVE FUN

Candlelight is always elegant. If you are having this in the spring or early summer, so maybe an outdoor garden party. Table rentals and table cloth rentals are cheap. You can buy 2 dozen roses for 14 dollars at Costco, Sam's, or BJs. Roses and candles as centerpieces are always beautiful. Or, you could get large fish bowls. float some Lillie's and floatable candles in them. Go to the local fabric store and buy fabric to make table toppers for over the table cloths to bring in some color. If you did it outside, try the better than linen napkins, and the plastic plates that mimic china (they are typically white with a silver rim). There is flatware that also mimics silverware. Would all look nice in an outdoor setting. Also, an appetizers and cocktails party (do the service around 3:00 ) will save you money as you won't be serving a full meal. Another cost saver is to do a morning service (around 10:00) and then do a brunch with egg casseroles, fruits, waffles, rolls and sandwich meats. Good luck!

If they had a song they danced to as the "First Dance" at their wedding, find out what it is and download it or maybe they have it in a collection of theirs. Maybe they have a favorite love song. For sure....play music from their era and have dancing for everyone. To save money (if money is tight), have a family member be the Disc Jockey. Music always makes the atmosphere very nice.
