What is a dorm party like?

What is some Super Bowl party food ideas that are healthy, cheap, and "cookable" in a residence hall (dorm)?

  • I'm an RA who is planning a Super Bowl Party. To make the program even better, I plan to have food for several reasons. First, for social reasons, it should attract people to the program. And for educational reasons, it should teach residents (1) Healthy food options, (2) Inexpensive food options, and (3) Various snack ideas that can be made in a residence hall (i.e., w/ a microwave). One idea includes Valveta (sp?) Cheese and salsa, with BAKED chips. Thoughts? I'm not sure how healthy this is. Any suggestions would be appreciated, and if there's any other RAs out there, please share your Super Bowl program ideas. By the by... The school is in IL, so Bears related food over Colts, please :)

Velveeta is high in fat etc. Here is a leaner healthier no-cook alternative. Most of the bread is pulled out of the loaf, so the carbs are probably lower. You could use a salad dressing of choice. Maybe serve w low fat potato or cold macaroni salad. Avocado and Smoked Turkey Salad in a Bread Basket Serving Size : 8 Dressing: ¼ Cup olive oil 3 Tbsp balsamic vinegar 1 Tbsp marmalade 1 clove garlic, finely chopped ½ tsp curry powder ¼ tsp ground black pepper ¼ tsp salt (In a small bowl, whisk together dressing ingredients until blended. Set aside. Salad: 2 loaves French bread (12 inches long) 2 Tbsp olive oil 2 Tbsp balsamic vinegar 8 Cups mixed greens 1 Cup cubed (1/2 inch) smoked deli turkey 1 Cup cubed (1/2 inch) papaya 1 Cup red or green grapes (halved if large) 1 medium red apple, cored and cubed (1/2 inch) 1 ripe avocado, seeded, peeled, and cut into crescents Cut one inch off the top of each loaf of bread. Using serrated knife, cut around inner edge of crust to remove the inside of the bread. Remove by tearing out all of the interior of the loaf. A 1/2 inch shell should remain. In a small bowl, mix together oil and vinegar. Brush on inside of each loaf. Bake in preheated oven at 375 degrees F for 5 minutes. Remove from oven and cool. In large bowl, combine greens, turkey, papaya, grapes, and apple. Whisk together dressing and pour over salad. Toss to coat. Spoon into breadbaskets. Top with avocado crescents. Cut each breadbasket into four pieces and serve.

Hi - I'm from Canada so am pretty ambiguous who wins, but i always loved the Chi accent "da bears" so have sided with them. On the snack side, Velveeta is NOT nutritional. Unless you want a bunch of already-pumped-up guys running rampant on red food dye and sugar, not not serve this. An alternative is: Tortilla roll-up contents: 1 small cream cheese 1 bunch green onions red pepper 1 tomatoes salsa Directions: lay tortilla flat and spread cream cheese thorougly over one side of tortilla. Sprinkle chopped green onion and red pepper and tomatoes over cheese side of tortilla. Roll it up like you would a crepe. Chill,if possible, because it "sets" better. Just before putting on the plate, lay out a bowl of salsa and slice the rolled tortilla mix into 1" slices. Not only is this extremely healthy, it is mouth-watering! Have fun - go Bears!

aaaaah here is a colts fan offering you an idea or two, velveta is kind of high in salt and fat but it shouldnt kill them right away. cheesy philly chili dip, take a glass pie plate, spred a couple of packages of room temp philly cream cheese in it, fat free if you wish, then heat a can of chili and pour on the philly and then a generous pile of shredded cheddar, and ring the pie plate, which is sitting on a larger plate, with ritz crackers. you can always go with ranch dip and veggies.

OK - go out and buy an inexpensive crock pot. You can make chili - go chicken or ground turkey if you want healthier. Or if you can afford a roast of cheap meat you can make hot beef sandwiches. For the beef sandwiches out the roast into the crock pot with a can of beer and water to cover. Add a packet or two of Good Seasonings Italian Dressing Mix. Cook all day - shred with two forks and serve on buns which you can pick up at day old bakery. Add a large salad or veggie tray and you have a meal! You can also make fruit kabobs which you stick into a head of cabbage. You can still make your cheese dip, but try it this way: Layer in microwave dish, a can of re-fried beans, one can of beef tamales broken up and spread over beans, a jar of salsa, and low fat grated cheese. Microwave until heated and serve with baked chips. Check food sites because EVERYONE is showing Super Bowl ideas. You may also invite people to bring their own favorites.
