What should I do for Thanksgiving? Ideas anyone?

What should I do for Thanksgiving? There's just my husband and me . . . and my dad who can drive up. My oven doesn't work and I only have 3 out of 4 burners that work. My husband's family lives out-of-state and it's a bit late to buy plane tickets. A few of my friends will be in town, but no one has organized anything. I don't mind having Thanksgiving at my house but providing any baked dishes and a turkey would be hard to do. My husband refuses to go to my church where they have an awesomely delicious T-giving every year -- he says that he only wants to spend the holiday w/friends & family. So, ideas, anyone????

Heh, your husband sounds as stubborn as mine. :) OK, here's what I'd do in that situation. Call your supermarket deli and order a cooked turkey now to be picked up on T-day. Let them do that part. Do you have a microwave or crockpot? Could you borrow more crockpots from friends? Use those to keep the sides warm that you cooked on the stove. That'll free up some burners for any other dishes. Make as much as you can ahead and reheat in either the microwave, on a burner, or in a crockpot. I'm sure your dad will understand that your oven conked out at the wrong time and a repairman can't come out until next week. (Tiny white lie maybe, don't worry about it.) And laugh about it. Put anything from the deli on your own platters and in your bowls. Garnish them nicely yourself. When I say laugh about it, my former mother in law once forgot to turn the oven on! We had to order pizza and have that with the potatoes and stuffing and such. Things do happen! Have a happy Thanksgiving!

Since your oven doesnt work, you can purchase a pre-made turkey or ham and heat it up. You can make a stove top stuffing, mashed potatoes, and gravy. If you dont want to purchase a whole bird since its only the 3 of you, purchase the breast only, sold in the meat section.

You have a heavenly Thanksgiving Day throwing itself at you! Your oven doesn't work, so you won't have to bake; your husband will save your from a long drive, too much food, and too many people; you've gotten some great suggestions about buying ready made! Save yourself the headaches, expense, cleanup, and stress of a big Thanksgiving Day. Enjoy the comfortable setting with your dad and husband; watch some television, chat when you feel like it; take a nap, enjoy!!!

You could go to lowes and buy an inexspensive Turkey Fryer. They are wonderful, just add oil, heat to 400, put bird in, after 3 minutes turn down to 350, and about 40 minutes your bird is done (has to be thawed), you can also use fryer for fish, chicken. Can reuse oil a few times if cooking same meats.
Alot of local grocery stores and restaurants provide pre-made dinners. A whole turkey or ham, the sides and everything. I did that crap the year before last. It wasn't too bad! Just call them and place your order. I think mine ran about $50 or so. But it's worth it for the time and effort you save! Good luck girl, and have a happy Thanksgiving dinner!

As previously suggested, get some help from local stores, at least for the turkey and pie. And if your family is anything like mine, you can improve the overall mood with a pre-dinner drink or five. Just a thought.

I'm proud to call a cool upside down feline like you & fellow 3 burners out of 4 working kind of scrappy, get-by, but not over, cat like you a friend. Head bumps & purrs from the Zee-ster!! Oh the hell-i-dayz! What can I say? My husband is against the Church so I appreciate your dilemma. Given the problems with the oven, I think you have 1 of 2 good choices to make: celebrate a non-traditional thanksgiving at home on 3 burners or sit this one out. I'm not sure that going to the Church dinner sans husband is really the right way to celebrate a family get-together, you know. Try not to make this day more important than it is. I really don't care for this time of year for the pressure it puts on us to meet expectations and the pressure that places on families. You know Jesus MUST hate the way we celebrate his birth. Shoot, it's really Santa Claus day anyway. And what's Thanksgiving anyway? Are we thanking the natives for killing them with the infections we brought with us or for driving them off their land like squatters with no rights? Edit: This song was playing on the ride home & brought back great memories & I'm sending it out to you, cool cat. "Make a wish baby and love will make it come true."
