How do you plan a Murder Mystery Party?

• Me and my 8 friends are wanting to have a murder mystery party but instead of buying a kit we want to be creative and write it ourselfs. But since non of us have ever been to a "who done it" party we're kinda confused about what to do. Do you have any sugessions on how to write it, how to plan it, setting up clues and so forth?

  I've been to about 20 of them, and it's MUCH easier to get the kit (the first time), so you have a clue about what to do. The kits come with suggestions for decorations, costumes & menus. They also have a "script" for each person, which is included in their invitations, so they know what their role is - ahead of time. That way, too, no one knows anyone else role and script, and you can all be surprised ....
