What kinds of fruits can guinea pigs eat?

Why can't Guinea Pigs eat Iceburg lettuce?

  • I just recently got 2 female guinea pigs from a friend of mine who had gotten them for her children and they were no longer interested in them. She gave me all their toys and a bag of fruits and veggies. I used to have a guinea pig years ago, so I know whats good for them to eat and not, but I did a web search to find out whats good for them and not as far as fruits and veggies and I read that Iceburg Lettuce is a "no no" for them, but Roman lettuce is ok. My friend gave me a bag of the remaining Iceburg lettuce she had been feeding them. She said they love it. Why cant they have it? Can I give them the rest?

  • Answer:

Iceberg has no nutritional value, and can cause diarrhea, which can be very dangerous in such a small animal. I assume that since the piggies have been eating the lettuce, that it hasn't caused them any problems, so I guess you could feed the rest of the bag if you really want to. But honestly, I wouldn't feed them iceberg, knowing that it's not that good for them. They really like the darker lettuces, and mine get a lot of the same greens that my rabbit does: chicory, escarole, dill, parsley, kale, etc. Both of my piggies like curly parsley, but one won't eat the flat-leaf kind. It's fun to notice how their tastes differ. Good luck with your new friends!

I had a pet box turtle and the reason you want to avoid iceberg lettuce is that it has little nutritional value. Try something green.

They can eat it and it's not dangerous, but it is not nutritous at all, especially when compared to other leafy greens. It's mostly water, and may cause diarrhea. Romaine isn't much better. You can give mustard greens, turnip greens, dandelion greens, tomato, bell peppers, oranges. These also have vitamin C. Best to feed is a good grass hay like Timothy (no alfalfa please--too high in protein). A good pelleted food made with Timothy also. Always supplement the vitamin C every day.

it gives them diarrhea

Some now and then won't hurt, but does no good either, other than making little pig smiles. Like us, they often like things that aren't good for them.
