Can teenagers work in animal shelters?
-
I'm 16. I need a job. I need money. I love animals. And working in animal shelters seems perfect considering everything I've just said. So do animal shelters hire teenagers? And how much do they pay? Thanks in advance(:

Answer:
If you want to work in an animal shelter you will most likley have to volentere. Most animal shelters require you to be 18 because of saftey things. Again, your animal shelter may be different, so call them and find out. It varies depending on your city because the city where you live are the people who actually make the rules, not the person who owns/runs the shelter. An animal shelter will pay minimum wage because they are nonprofit. If you really want to work with animals, you might have to volentere and get a job at a local restruant or gas station. See if your grocery store has any job openings. Edit: Put yourself on craigslist as a dog/animal sitter. You can drive yourself there since you are 16 and you will be with animals. You could also be an after school baby sitter.

All shelters have their own regulations. You can work but get paid? No because of the high demand of people in your position unless you happen to have an associates degree at minimal they might have an opening for vet assistant or such but besides that they really are looking for volunteers not people expecting pay. I highly recommend volunteering if you plan on working in the zoologist field later in life even as a biologist or such. Shows you have dedication to serving even though you don't get paid.

Let me ask you this.. Are you alright seeing animals put down? Because I volunteered at a shelter before and I saw what happens. The animals that come in have about a week or two to get adopted and if they don't they are taken into the back room and put to sleep then they stack the dead animals in large freezer to dispose of properly later. I remember there was a whole bunch of puppies nobody wanted them so they killed them and it broke my heart even the older dogs.. They just want somebody to love them

Animal shelters do not pay volunteers, the point of working in a shelter is giving back to animals that are in hard situations. Your local pet store might hire you and actually pay you, check it out!

Shelters do have paid staff , it is usually low paying. I really think most places you would have to be 18 to actually be hired. But check with the individual shelters in your area to see what their policy is about that as well as about volunteering. Many do have volunteer program for teenagers. That doesn't help with the "needing money" part though. but if you want to go into a field involving working with animals, it would be good on the resume as well as it would be nice to be helping animals to get adopted. ( but depending on the type of shelter and the type of community you're in, it could also be depressing if they are killing a lot of animals) (btw, I don't know if you still care, but you had another question posted "is this a Siamese?". I have seen quite a lot of pedigreed Siamese kittens including those of the older, more moderate type. That kitten you posted was a cute blue point domestic shorthair kitten who would have inherited the gene for the pointed pattern from some distant Siamese ancestors but is probably mostly Western "moggy". . I agreed with some answers that the coat was suspiciously (lol) fluffy. looked like she has a double coat which would mean not Siamese. )

Well i am 15 and i work in the dog kennels at the RSPCA, but it is volunteer. the minimum age there is 15, so different shelters will have different age limits. Although most shelters only pay there high up staff and full time and if your a teenager then im guessing you go to school. It is an excellent job, even though i dont get paid - I would rather do that than a paid job :)

You might have to be over 18 years due to health and safety regulations. Edit: however this is for NZ. I don't know what country you live in but other countries may have other age limits. Just ring your local shelter and ask them how you can help out. They always love extra help. If you volunteer first you will get loads of work experience for your resume.

You could do volunteer work. But you can also talk to the shelter staff about volunteering and using them as a job reference. :)
