How do I take care of my baby sparrow?

A baby barn sparrow fell out of it's nest how do I take care of it??

  • I'v put it back in it's nest several times and it's siblings keep pushing it out! How will I take care of it?? Any suggestions are welcome!

  • Answer:

If you can reach the nest (which it sounds like you can) you can make a make-shift nest out of a small butter container, or similiar. Be sure to poke holes in the bottom and line it with grass or something similiar. Put it right near the other nest. The parents will continue to feed it even if it has your scent on it. This is a myth. Birds like sparrows do not have a good sense of smell. If it has feathers and a small tail and continues to be on the ground, chances are it's a fledgling. That means that it's in the process of learning to fly. It can take anywhere from 24-48 hours. During that time the parents will continue to care for it. Please do not attempt to raise the bird. Barn sparrows are a difficult species to try to do as they eat bugs for the majority of their diet.

my friends mother used to take care of sick and abandoned birds...this is what she did...she put a heating pad under several towels in the bottom of the cage and fed them kitten food that had been soaked in water, with a syringe...per a vet's advise

They make powdered baby bird food that can be purchased at pet stores. If you can't do that, then get canned cat food and make it the consistency of yogurt using water. Use a syringe to slowly feed the bird. Be careful, you don't want the bird to aspirate (inhale) it into their lungs. The crop is a sack-lack area right at their neck that you need to watch. When it expands(buldges out), it is full and you don't need to feed anymore. Use a heating pad on low, covered with a towel or paper towels to keep him/her warm. Feed every 2 hours. When he/she begins to walk around by himself/herself, start introducing wild bird seed and the "instinct" will come to them to start eating on their own. Don't handle the bird a lot. You want to be able to let him/her go.

last summer i came across one and if it really is tame the vet i went 2 said that if it still lived(i found a hurt one) u just get a cage 4 it and they make food special for wild birds such as that

Leave it alone, you will only kill it anyway, it's mother will feed it even if it is on the ground.

About a five pound rock should do it.

Call your local Vet or Pet supply store, they will give you advice, or perhaps even take it and care for it themselves.

the reason why they keep kicking the bird out of the nest is because sparrows dont want the bird because it has a human scent to it. if a mother bird finds out its baby smells like humans, it will abondon it....so maybe you should just leave it and hope for the best
