What could I do instead of being a vet?

What do I need to know about being a vet?

  • I want to become a vet and I have researched some information online, but I want information from people who have gone through vet school or people who are vets. I have a few questions: -Can I go to community college to take my math and english classes before going to vet school? -Is vet school hard to get into? -Is vet school hard? -Do alot of people fail or drop out of vet school? -Is being a vet hard? -Is it worth the long school years? -Have you ever gotten bitten by a patient? -If so, did it hurt? Did you have a serious mark? I'm sorry I have so many questions it's just that I really want to work with animals and I am curious about vet school and becoming a vet. Please answer honestly...I want to know the truth. Also, if you have any other information about vet school or the job as a vet...please let me know. I appreciate every bit of information. Thanks so much for your help!

  • Answer:

I am currently enrolled in college for Pre-Vet. To be a vet you need a 4 year bachelors degree in biology, before you can go to vet school. Yes vet school is hard to get into, there aren't a lot of schools in the US for veterinary which makes it very competitive. I would suggest that if you want to work with animals, be a zoologist instead. I am currently 50/50 about being a Vet or being a zoologist instead. Vet school in itself is easily $250,000 for the program, not to mention you need to get a 4 year degree in biology first which adds even more money.
