Can a pet rabbit live in a hutch outside in the winter?

  • Can a pet rabbit stay outside in the winter ive put loads of hey in the bedroom and a weather shield on the front of the hutch. Should i put him in a plastic tub in the house on cold nights which would be best.

  • Answer:

Yes, Cover the hutch with plastic or wood to protect it from wind and put a blankie or something in the hutch for the bunny to snuggle in.

I live in Minnesota where it gets very cold. Your rabbit will be just fine as long as he has a nice dry place out of the wind to sleep. Sounds like you've provided that. Moving him into the house for short periods would be very bad for him. Either keep him outside or inside but don't bring him back and forth. The change would be very stressful. I've kept rabbits outdoors for many years without any problem. You should, however, feed extra during the cold. Keeping a good quality hay in front of your bunny at all times should do it.

I professionally bred and showed Californian rabbits for many years and was the Eastern states Youth Rep for the ARBA. All our rabbits were raised in outdoor hutches that were built from wood with only the front door having 1" x 1' wire framed in wood. All bedding was of straw to help keep them warm. At night or on extremely windy days we had large canvas tarps that we had nailed to the roofs and we would pull them down and latch them underneath. The worst threat to them is not the cold but the drafts and once rabbits get a cold it can be a lifelong problem many times leading to pneumonia. Outdoors is actually healthier than indoors with all the chemicals we use inside and a sensitive nose, but take the proper precautions to keep your bunny dry and build or buy a good shelter.

rabbits have warm places to go at night if you leave him outside in the winter, he will freeze to death unless he has a very warm and furry place to sleep ( that almost completely surrounds him ). safest bet is to have him inside.

I had rabbits, and yes they can stay outside, just be sure to use a lot of hay, and they usually build a nest type thing. Also make you sure feed and water them well in the winter. I get a lot of a Lake effect snow so it can be bitterly cold and my rabbits were always fine. If the hutch is in a path of wind, maybe cover it up with a tarp or something to shield that. :)

He can,but he'd be a lot happier indoors. The other great advantage to keeping your rabbit indoors is that you get to see him much more often without having to go outside. I keep my rabbit indoors and he's fantastic company and he's totally clean too. The dangers of outdoor rabbits can involve them freezing to death, getting ill, frozen water, being lonely. All these dangers are removed when the rabbit lives indoors as part of the family.

Yes my rabbit lives outside in his hutch. Make sure no predators can get to him. Or that he doesn't freeze to death. Or that he isn't scared ti death.

Yes my sister has a rabbit and it isn't affected by the cold at all.
