Grass hay for my rabbit?

  • I know rabbits need unlimited access to hay so in preparation of bringing my new bunny home in a few days I went to the pet store to buy some. When I got there all they had was alfalfa at an expensive price at that. I work on a farm and know hay pretty well and I can get an attire bale of alfalfa for the price of a little bag the store sells. Any ways my work grows their own grass hay and I was wondering if it was okay to feed my rabbit? I could bring home a flake when ever I need it and not have to worry about having to store it any where and I can get it super cheap. If it's not okay what do you recommend? I work at 2 other barns now and then as well so I have access to all types of hay grass,legume, alfalfa and straw(even though that's bedding for live stock and not food)

    Alfalfa hay is too rich for adult rabbits but are good for baby rabbits as long as they don't get too much. I would recommend Timonthy hay. You can get it at any pet store..

Alfalfa hay is good for baby bunnies. Im sure it should be okay. But you should look up the ingredients in the hay at the store and compare it to the ones found in yours.

Buy Western Timothy hay from Oxbox. alfalfa is too rich.

Hay used for horses is generally good for rabbits as well. They have similar needs and can eat many of the same foods. As long as the hay is not mouldy and is good quality (green, fresh smelling, not dusty etc), it will be good for a rabbit. Alfalfa is fine for young rabbits (under 6 months), but should be avoided for adults. If the hay you can get does have alfalfa, try to limit it to no more than 5% if you can. A grass mix (timothy, brome, orchard grass etc) if fine. Legume hay is alfalfa, so is not good for adult rabbits. Stick to the grass hay one and that should be fine.
