How do I get my horse to trust and respect me?

How do I gain trust and respect from my horse?

  • I am sharing a 19 year old horse. I'm only really interested in hacking out and playing about with a bit of dressage on him. He is owned by myself, a man and another woman, being the newest owner I am finding it really hard to establish a relationship with him... I feel as though he doesn't respect me because any routine I try and give him is disturbed by the other two owners. I have time to ride him 3-5 times a week, the lady feed him everyday and the man is only interested in riding on a sunday. I took the horse out yesterday and he started napping, I was not able to control him at all and he ran all the way back down the lane to the yard. I have tried asserting myself in the form of pushing him back when he intrudes on my personal space, not letting him nip me and insisting that he works properly when I play about with dressage.. all of this seems to make him resent me more? I'm not sure what to do. Any suggestions?
