Is it illegal to own a pet bat in the United States?

I don't know about legal issue.. but please don't get a bat! I know that's not what you want to hear, but owning a bat as a pet is animal cruelty. Bats live up to 50 years in the wild, but it's extremely rare for them to live a year in captivity. They usually die within the first few hours to the first few months. No one knows exactly why, humans just can't provide to them what Mother Nature can. There's so many other cool things you can get for pets! From bearded dragons to ball pythons! You can even get a fennec fox or a lynx. Just google "exotic pets" and you'll get all kinds of breeders and stuff! Make sure you give any exotic animal the appropriate home and everything. I dont think it is, and even if it is, hide it no one will know....Where can you buy bats? I hear that they make great pets and I want one my self actually!

It looks like they would fall under a Class III personal pet permit. The gray bat, Indiana bat and Florida mastiff bat are endangered species and are illegal to possess. You need to send in an application and a questionnaire about its care, both of which can be found at the website below.

I don't know about the legal aspect. But be careful. Bats carry rabbies.

Why would it be? You can own anything, just keep it in a cage.

you need to have a special license. this calls for usda and cdc inspections though
