Why do people ask "what's wrong with my pet" on here instead of going to a VET?
-
I'm getting really, really, REALLY frustrated with all the posts on here from people saying their dogs eye is bleeding, their cat isn't moving, they're cat's been sneezing for a month, their dog's stomach is really hard, their cat hasn't eaten for a week. PEOPLE we are NOT VETS. We can NOT SEE YOUR PETS. YOU NEED TO TAKE YOUR PET TO A VET. Not doing so could mean life or death for your pet. If you can't afford a vet - then please surrender the pet to a shelter so that someone who has the means to take care of a pet can give it the care it needs AND deserves. And for those thinking about getting a pet. Owning a pet is not a "right". It's something you EARN by having the education, time, room, knowledge and finances to be able to have. If you can't afford vet care - DON'T GET A PET!!!!!!

Well said. This irritates me as well. It's not so bad when it's a less urgent situation, but when the descriptions sound as though the animal is on its deathbed I really start to wonder what goes through the minds of some people. What irritates me even further is the number of people on here who give ill-informed answers that, if the askers are stupid enough to follow the advice, are probably going to make their pets even sicker. As a trainee veterinarian (I qualify in a months time), I try to offer the best advice I can, but some answers on here are just mind-bogglingly ridiculous.

Their are professionals on this web site as well as youngsters. Some people are'nt rich or born into money, they genuinly like animals for pleasure not as trophy's. Some times animals (pets) are the only family someone has. Usually people will scrape together whatever means they have to tend to a pet. Have you been to a vet lately? Their prices are outrageous, it's hard enought to spay or neuter and get their first vaccines. Mine was 325.00 to do that. But I had the money at the time to do it. Frankly your statement is insulting. Maybe you don't have the education to raise a pet since you think the only solution is a vet.

They might be in another country, the might be in wheelchairs, they might thinking on going or waiting for a person that has the car and needs it to work (if they have two, the other one is broken) while waiting, they want to take advantage and post to get an idea on what to do...because you don't know why they ask! Of course they can also be mean, are not qualified to get a pet, have no education...but that's not in your hands. If you want to help, kindly respond them or give them advice or ask them your concerns directly

Because this is Yahoo Answers and they expect answers and hope no one will poke fun at them and give them answers because that is what Yahoo Answers is all about!! GET IT!! And also why waste your points asking that kind of STUPID QUESTION!! And you have no right insinuating things about people you do not know. Offer your opinion and maybe ad "you should see a vet" either that or dont answer at all!! And just to add, if you are going to just berate people for there honest answers WHY BOTHER!!!

I am speculating here, not knowing for sure. It appears to me that there are a lot of people in this world who do not understand that the Internet is a convenient way to link information in which a lot of that information can be incorrect, in fact could be most of it is incorrect. It also appears to me that there are a lot of people on Yahoo Answers who are children, eager to learn, but have huge gaps in what they have learned so far, such as how to communicate effectively. When at home, at school, their parents and teachers and friends know them well enough to translate what they really mean, to fill in the blanks of incomplete questions, but on the Internet, strangers unfamiliar with their location on the learning curve of life ... we can have a hard time figuring out what it is that they are asking. Thus, a lot of kids who have not yet figured out what to do in an emergency, facing some of the first emergencies of their lives, thinking the Internet is the first place to go for help. I would think family is the first place to go for guidance ... parents probably know what to do, but then children are trying to learn how to learn to fend for themselves ... parents will not always be around, plus there is some eagerness to venture out of the nest. Perhaps one of the gaps in their learning curve of life is how to use the phone book ... either dead tree edition or internet edition ... to find the professionals relevant to current needs. I think also Yahoo Answers needs some things I may go to the FORUM and suggest ... I get nervous any time I see someone posting a question about * some person or pet has some medical problem * some person is in desperate need of legal advice * some person seems to be contemplating suicide * some person seems to be contemplating harming others I want to include a link to a page on Yahoo Community Guidelines that says we are not certified to offer certain kinds of advice ... if you have a serious problem, you need to go to the relevant professionals in "real life" (outside the Internet) It would also seem that reporting a situation to Yahoo "abuse" is unhelpful ... we need to be able to do a dual link to some place else like a mental health site In Yahoo answers we point the person who is in trouble to the mental health site, and on the mental health site we post a link to the Yahoo question ... looks like here is someone who needs more help than Yahoo Answers can provide

It is not that I can not afford vet care. It is that I live 100 miles from any kind of vet emergency and when it is the middle of the night and doggy is sick, I look for help.

you're very correct. but people who are on here asking for advice on how to care for a sick/injured pet don't seem to get the concept that it is a LIVING BREATHING LIFE FORM that has a mind of its own. ppl like that should never be allowed near a pet. behavior problems I can see for asking advice and asking about how to make an animal comfortable on the way to the vet's as well. people, please take good care of your pets! sorry, I seem to have taken up a large amount of this answer space to a rant. I apologize if I offend anyone, but this is how I feel. very nice question, by the way.

Why do people come on here looking for medical advice for complicated problems....even life-threatening problems, when they should be on their way to an emergency room? Sheesh! I could answer some of their questions, but that would be practicing medicine without a license.
