If I am allergic to rabbits, is it likely I will be allergic to guinea pigs?
-
Hello! I really want two guinea pigs and my folks say that I can have two as long as I am not allergic to them! Sadly, I would have loved a rabbit but I am allergic to them. If I stroke a rabbit or go near one I sneeze and my skin itches and my eyes sting etc.. is it likely I will be allergic to guinea pigs or only some breeds of guinea pigs etc? Thanks x

Answer:
Rabbits and Guinea pigs are not that closely related. You could defineately be allergic to one and not the other. You should go to a petstore and find out. Keep in mind- If you have a lot of allergies then you probably will develop an allergy to them after a while. The fastest way to develop animal allergies is to be exposed to their urine and feces- changing a small animals cage is exactly that. I would suggest a pet that doesn't have a very long life expectancy. This gives you less time to develop the allergy. I had 3 rats before I became allergic. Now I can't touch them. Another option would be adopting adult guinea pigs from a shelter. If rabbits are really the only thing that you've been allergic to then you might be fine. It's really hard to say. It normally takes 6 months to develop an allergy to a new stimuli. Just because your not allergic now doesn't mean it will stay that way.

well it depends wat it was about the rabbit u are allergic to, you'll have to try finding someone or a pet shop which has guinea pigs so u cud try holding one to see if ur allergic I had guinea pigs too and altho i loved them to bits, they werent the most exciting pets around...if you are allergic u shud think about gerbils they are cute, so easy to look after and reele fun! you also less likely to be allergic to them as theyre so different from rabbits and guinea pigs good luck on your guinea pig quest!! =D

Lynn gives good advice! I would suggest you consult your doctor on the issue first. I also think it'd be a good idea to visit with some guinea pigs before buying or adopting one, just to make sure you don't have an instant allergic reaction. As far as cleaning the cage goes, play it on the safe side and wear rubber gloves and a face mask that covers your nose and mouth and will prevent you from breathing in dander and other allergins. The masks are just heavy paper, cupped to fit over your nose & mouth, with an elastic string to fit around your head. You can purchase the masks at any medical supply store and most home improvement stores (like Home Depot or Lowes). If all goes well and you do decide to look for a guinea pig, I would recommend a short hair variety, just to cut down on the amount of shedding and what not. Again, be on the safe side. I always advocate adoption from humane societies/animal shelters/rescues before purchasing a pet and supporting the industry of overbreeding for profit. Whatever you do, do NOT house your guinea pig outside. I suggest researching any pet before you get it.
