Can a Quarter horse jump? and how high?

  • i am looking in to buying a 15 h. 5 year old dapple gray gelding quarter horse. i would love to do jumping and/or cross country, and anything westren. would he be able to do it? he has had no health problems or anything. he sounds like a great horse!!!!! if he can jump, how high would he be able to jump?

  • Answer:

It depends on his training. I know a good lot of QH's that can jump. Most of the beginner horses at my hunter/jumper barn are quarter horses. If he's never jumped before, you're going to have to try and train him to, and it he has, it's just a matter of how high he's been. I don't think I'd go much higher than..eh..3ft, just to be on the safe side. Some quarter horses just aren't built for it. I'm not sure that x country would be the best choice, though you could always try it. I personally think a TB would be better suited to that, but I've never done it, so. He's only five, so he's probably not had too much training, and if he has, it's most likely in one discipline. Does his ad say what he excels in? Hope you can get him!
