What else can I put with my betta?

What types of fish can I put in with a Betta fish?

  • I have a small aquarium and I want to put a least two more fish in it. But I know Betta's fight with each other, so what type of fish can I put in without the Betta fighting it or vise vera? (I want fish that can survive in a tank without an air pump system)

  • Answer:

Depends on how small the tank is, and somewhat on how long the tank has been set up. In a 5 gal tank, for instance, you could consider snails and/or shrimp (ghost shrimp, cherry shrimp, etc). You could also possibly consider an oto cat, if the tank is well established (set up at least 3 or 4 months). Otos are very sensitive to water quality and won't do well in a new setup. If you have very good filtration in the 5 gal, you might be able to get away with a group of 3 pygmy cories. But if you do that, you probably cannot do the shrimp and oto, since there just isn't enough room for all of the above. It's a one or the other kind of scenario. If you're talking smaller than 5 gal, you really don't have room for other fish, but could add snails and/or shrimp. Bigger than a 5 gal gives you other options, but I'm assuming small is probably 5 gal or smaller. ** Edit ** 1 gal is definitely not going to hold anything else. In all reality, it probably isn't sufficient for the betta either, unless you are doing daily water changes. Waste will build up much too quickly in a 1 gallon tank. Minimum for a betta is 2.5 gal, and even at that it can be hard to keep them healthy. If you are looking to upgrade, I'd go for at least a 5 gallon setup. Make sure you have a heater and filter rated for the tank size that you end up with. 10 gallon tanks are very cheap, if you've got the space for it, and with that you have a lot more options for other critters in the tank. Good luck!

I you ask me, i would put that Betta in a bowl. Then you could get even more fish for the tank. They don't do well with other fish and I would strongly advise you not to put any fish with the Betta. It may just end up in a fish fight.

well the betta needs space and i had one we put another fish in and well THAT NEW FISH DIED :( a one gallon tank is a good size for a betta to be alone

i recommend not to get another fish for your betta, epeically when it's less than a gallon but if you really want to you should get any fish that can live in small spaces, and has short fins that also is not bright in color, also get a fish that is a bottom feeder, so the betta fishes won't feel much as a threat Also get some hiding places for the fishes you should probably watch them and how they react with each other for the next 15 minutes to see how everything is going

they get along with unaggresive fish and fish that don't have to flashy fins, or with fish that don't nibble at fins. it depends how large of tank your getting also because you don't want to make him feel crowded *some they get along with* Tetras (must be is a small school) cory catfish( best if there is 3+) . Platies right now I have one male betta in a 10 gallon with 1 albino cory, 1 spotted cory, and 1 green cory. and they all get along very well with each other. so i highly suggest maybe a few cories

Here's the best way to know how many fish you can put in a tank. 1" of fish for every gallon of water. Your betta is probably about an inch and a half so you can't put anymore fish in the tank. Since you have too much fish, you need to keep the water clean. If you get a bigger tank, you can put any fish in there that the pet stores sell as community fish like mollies & guppies.

Bettas aren't very good for community tanks. So there are not many other fish you can put in there without also putting an air stone in. If you could divide your tank, you could try putting a female betta in one side, if you can even get female bettas in your area.

I've put in small catfish with Betta's before, also Zebra Danios, and nothing went wrong. Anything that isn't too large and doesn't have any flashy colors on it. Oh, Algae Eaters grow too large, and the Betta will attack them.
