What type of fish is this?

What type of fish can I put with a betta?

  • I have had my male beta fish since late October. I currently got a 5 gallon tank with a filter and a light. I want to put my male beta fish with other fish, but I am not sure what type of fish and how many. My friend had a mini cat fish with hers for a while, but it died five months after. She said that it was sick and its fins were bleeding. She also had a frog that died a day later. I also researched other websites. They said that Platies are good, as well as Mollies, and Swordtail and tetras. But I read that tetras are fin nippers and the beta will get angered by the tetra. And I also read that guppies are good, but you can't get the ones with large tails. I am not sure which is correct. I want to get different types of fish. And I saw a Mickey Mouse Platies which looked pretty. Which fish do you suggest and how many that will get along with a male beta?

  • Answer:

I've had good luck with catfish and neon tetra's. Haven't tried any other types of fish. You don't want anything with a tail that could mislead a Beta into thinking that he has run into another male Beta.

A dwarf frog. Seriously, they are good together.

I've found that bettas go good with dwarf african frogs and cory catfishes, and small guppies :) I dont recommend mollies..they are a little too active for them.

No fish is really safe, it depends on your beta though... Some betas will tolerate almost any fish but others will not tolerate anything!!! All you can do is try, go for dull fish first, like dannios, the more color and the bigger their fins are, the more the beta will want to fight it... Try some danios to see how your beta reacts before you gets some colorful fish... Edit: DO NOT GET HIM A FEMALE BETA!!!!! They will kill eachother for sure!!! You can only put males with females when they breed, other than that, they'll fight as much as 2 males will... Also, betas like as big of tanks as anyother fish, they are put in the small tanks because they can survive and it's easier to take care of them in a small tank. Hope this helps...GOOD LUCK!!!

BETA tanks have separations in them for a reason. They are fighters and can not be kept in the same tankwith other fishunless you have the divider plates in place.

The fish you mentioned will work but only in a large tank , like 30 gallons at least. The Mickey Platies, rasboras and neons work well because they are quiet and docile. The Betta needs space to feel secure so in a large enough tank, he will work in a community of other fish. You can only have one male Betta but , if you can find them, two females can be added. By having two females, the male does not feel threatened and is less aggressive.

With a beta put in any kind of fish that you don't want to live.

I've had several Bettas...All males. and they are good with any other fish. they will chase them at first because thats "who they are" as fish. Mine never had any trouble with other fish. i did get a sword tail fish in there with him once and they chased eachother around a lot. But nothing horrible happened.
