right now i have a 20 gallon tank, with 3 platies, 4 red serpaes, 6 neons, and 2 tiger barbs.. i of course wanna get more tiger barbs, and more friends for the others as well..possibly a cool dwarf gourami or a blue ram..but i need more space!! right now as it is, i have a pretty bad *** set up. see for yourself: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v664/saoxcore/0_IMAGE_125.jpg (dont mind the tank, its a LOT less tacky now) so the bad thing is, jumping up a size makes me have to re-arrange everythign and keep the tank off the table cause theres no more room left :[ but should i buy soemthing like a 29, or a 55 gallon? cause im on craigslist right now, and im seeing a couple great deals..2 on a 55 gallon, and 1 on a 29. the 55's are about 150 bucks, but include a stand and most things for the tank. the 29 includes all the same things, also with a stand and is 100 but its OBO. is 29 not much of a jump? im scared 55 is TOO much. thats double the size of what i have right now..lol and how would i go about bringing everything from my old tank to my new tank?

Answer:
You know the 55 would be shortly after the 29, so just be proactive, and save some money by getting the 55 now. It won't be too terribly big, its a good size tank. If you got the 29, you would eventually want a bigger tank is all I'm saying. To get the new tank going, when you do a water change from your old one, vacuum some of the gravel. Dump all that nasty stuff in there, and add some plants, and gravel, and anything else you can from the 20. This will help it cycle. Also, run the filter from the 20 in your new tank. Just make sure the new tank is established before moving your fish over. EDIT: Put the new filter on the 20.

Go big. As big as you can afford / have space for etc. Larger tanks are actually easier to run, especially if you dont over crowd them. When you upgrade to a bigger tank, simply move EVERYTHING from the old tank, gravel, ornaments, filters, water, fish etc. Top up with fresh treated tap water. Your new tank will now have two filters, the old one is cycled, the new one isn't. But the cycle bacteria you moved across will still match the fish you moved,. Instant cycle for the new tank. The new filter will gradually pick up some cycle bacteria and make it safe to add more fish over time. Ian

That's a great deal for the 55 gallon - I'd jump on that quick :) You will thank us later for recommending the 55 over the 29 or 40 gallon tanks - trust me. I have many tanks ranging from 15 gallons to 120 gallons and love them all! Mind you, I breed fish - haha! But in all seriousness, you want the room for the schools to have their own turf and space to move around - your fish will thank you for the upgrade. Cycle the new tank for about 2 weeks (let it run while slowly adding in decor from the old tank one piece at a time - so you don't freak your current buddies out). That will build the natural good bacteria in your new tank that your fish are already accustomed to. Once the two weeks have passed and all of your old stuff is in the new tank, slowly move two fish at a time (day by day I mean - not in the same net haha!) and see how they react. If everything is good - you should have a new home for your friends that will provide them with everything they could want! Good luck!

As long as you have the space for it, I would go for the 55 gallon. If you enjoy aquarium's a lot, in my opinion the bigger the better. I have a 90 gallon tank, and it is a lot of work but it is worth it. If you see a good deal for the 55 I would go for it, but as the poster above said, you have to cycle the new tank before moving your fish friends into it. For at least 2 weeks! Pretty much what he said is exactly what you need to do, you can also buy some cheap fish to put in there for the cycle to help build up the ecosystem in the tank, but moving all your stuff from the old tank over should take care of that problem well enough. There are also some great fish forums you can visit. I use http://www.fishforums.com/forum/ all the time, it is full of resources and a great community. Good luck!

Well, if your going to buy more fish, you really should get a 29 gallon tank. Fish don't like it when they don't have much space. You should really have about 1 and a half gallons per fish (at least). 55 gallons is probably excessive and not needed, but if you really wanted something that big, go for it. Good luck with the fish, enjoy.
A 40 gallon would be a perfect size also be aware that tiger barbs can/will be aggressive to the gourami and you would have better luck on getting a ram. Also be sure to get at least 4 more barbs, 2 more serpas and maybe some more neons and livebearers.

I would get a 40 gallon,it is not to large but it will house the fish you want. Of course it will take you a while to rearrange, but it depends if you really want new fish.

get the 55. It will save you money.
I may be blonde but not dumb!
Haha, I'm in a similar situation! I have a 20 and am working on upgrading over the summer. Really, just skip the middle stepping stone and jump right to the big guns! I'm personally working on getting this sweet 56 gallon tank I saw in a store : ) so excited! The 29 will only give you 9 more gallons, and those won't seem like a damn thing when you're looking for more tank mates. You'll be stocked up again in a few weeks time. I honestly believe that in time, you'll want to jump from the 29 up, and it'll all just be a waste of your money and time. Best of Luck!
