What kinda of fish can you put in the same tank w a betta?

My boyfriend is wondering the same thing and we've been researching a lot. It all depends on how aggressive your betta is. He honestly might not get along with any fish at all but most bettas can tolerate a pretty eclectic community. You also have to make sure you have a big enough tank so that your betta can have his own territory when he needs it and you'll need live plants or something similar so they have hiding spots. My boyfriend always kept apple snails with his bettas and they don't bother eachother at all. Other than that, ghost shrimp and other bottom feeders seem to be a good option. You can consider cory or oto catfish but these fish like to be in schools so you should get more than one (preferably more than 4); they are also tropical so if you don't already have a heater you should get one. Most people also say that you can put african dwarf frogs with them. You can try neon tetras but again, you'd have to get enough that they can form a school so they aren't threatened by the betta and nip at his fins. You can also try white cloud minnows. As of right now, my boyfriend has 4 catfish with his betta and 2 apple snails and they're all perfectly happy. He has a heater and a filter and the tank is only 5 gallons. You really can try anything as long as (1) the fish doesn't get too big in size and (2) that it likes warm (around 78 degrees) water like your betta does and (3) that it doesn't have elaborate fins and bright colors like your betta so he doesn't get confused and think it's another betta and feel threatened. You should also be careful of fish that are known to be "nippers" because your bettas fins are very sensitive and prone to infection if torn.

Depending on the size of your tank, pretty much anything but another betta. I also would avoid any fin nippy fish like tiger barbs. Gourami are in the same family as betta so its best not to keep them together either, but if you have a smaller tank like 10 gallons or so you can put some harlequin rasboras in with your betta. A school or Cory Cats goes great in many tanks. Personally I like to keep fish from the same areas together, since betta are naturally found in southeast asia pick fish from there like the rasboras and danios and some of the smaller 'sharks'. Depending on your betta, he may get aggressive with other 'pretty' tank mates and be a little nippy with them. I have one that lives with a red-tailed shark, 4 cherry barbs and 2 amano shrimp.

I can't answer your question, but I can tell you that I put my Betta in my tank with 3 Gouramis, and the Gouramis were very aggressive to each other. The Betta just hid in the Water Sprite, seemingly stressed. I took him out, and the Gouramis started getting along better. Several hours later I put him back in, and again they started chasing and nipping each other. So he's out now for good...don't know where I'm going to put him, but not in there.

Ignore an awful lot of the posts here. Basically, your bettas personality is a big factor here. Some can be peaceful in a community, others are highly territorial towards any other fish. Your best bet is a school rather than another single fish as this will alleviate any animosity - just follow a few simple rules.. Don't get any fish with flowing fins that the betta could mistake for it's own species, such as guppies. And don't get any that will nip the bettas fins, such as neon tetras. Peaceful tankmates such as a few rasboras and a snail or a few danios would be perfect - minus the snail if you don't want one Ask at your Local Fish Shop for their suggestions on the best school compatible with a betta. It will have some company but won't feel threatened, and won't have an enemy to focus on.

Your tank first needs to be over 10 US gallons, filtered and heated. If its not, it's unsuitable. Bettas are territorial animals and don't want or need friends. They can be kept with other fish, but the other fish need their own requirements met (nice big tank for starters) and they need to be established in the tank BEFORE the Betta. Adding new fish to an already established Betta territory is likely to cause the Betta to kick off, whereas if the others were there first, they'd just be part of the furniture. Bettas are best kept with non-descript mid-bottom dwellers like Corydoras - common Cory species need to be kept in groups in at least 15-20 gallons.

dont listen to that guy^^ he clearly never owned one Betta's are actually a peaceful community fish they just get there name siamese fighting fish because males will fight/kill any other betta with them but they get on with most fish just no other Betta's or no male mollies or any fish that likes to fin nip like angle fish but there good with snails, tetras, mollies, platys, plecos, some gouramis, red tail sharks most fish that dont fin nip or have long wavey fins
