How many fish can I have in a 10 gallon aquarium?

What fish can go in a 10 gallon aquarium?

  • My tank is almost fully established, its been like a month since I hooked it all up. I had to gut it cause it was very dirty from all my other fish that died of ammonia I think. I was thinking maybe some rams, like bolivian or dwarf rams? Do they get too big? How big? And if I can, how many can fit? Also, I kept and bred guppies and platies before they all died so I don't know about going with them again. I also had a male betta with all my other fish along with a female who kicked the crap out if him. Not a good idea to keep them together... I also tried a gourami once, but she died . Also, can I keep any loaches that don't get very big? And how many can I put in? Maybe goldfish? And what kind? How many? I just need an idea of what to get. Oh and please if you could, tell me the prices if the fish you name. Any answers will be GREATLY appreciated! Thank you!

makesure you cycle your tank before you add any fish. makesure u condition your water first, wait for 3 days with the tank running, add some nutrafin cycle($10.00) for 3 days, and let a sturdy fish(betta is what i used) live in the tank for about 3 weeks... makesure to test your water with an amonia testing kit... i got mine for 10 bucks at petco. as for the choice of fish. rams are very agressive, and they will not mix well with other fish and they need alot of space. guppys($3.00) and platys($3.00) are peaceful, colorful fish and would b perfect for a 10 gallon. gouramis(3-10 bucks) are very pretty fish, but stick to the smaller ones that only get to 2 inches long. i would recomend a female though. my male gourami in my 30 gal can get agressive with fish that bother him. females arent as aggressive though. goldfish get big and produce alot of waste so they would need a bigger tank. neon tetras( 2 bucks) are also very nice because they are small, peacefull and colorful... loaches can get up to 7 inches long and will be too big for your tank. cory catish($5.00) are small(2 inches at the biggest) and do not bother other fish as well as keeps the tank clean. u can put 1 inch of fish per gallon. i would recommend the fallowing: 1 guppy ($2.00) 1 platy ($3.00) 2 neon tetras( $2.00 each) 1gourami ($7.00) ( i would get a dwarf or a blue neon) 1 cory catfish ($5.00) hope this helps. good luck!!!

Have you actually been cycling the tank or just letting it run? If you don't cycle your fish will die again.

Do not over populate your 10 gallon tank. A 10-gal is a small tank and very nice to look at. For long-term it really fits about two (2) larger size fish and few very small ones. For example: Two (2) large goldfish [about 2"- 3" in diameter, usually cost $10 - $20 each] or angelfish [a bit pricier], and four (4) small neons or tiger barbs [pretty cheap, maybe $3 each]. That's more than enough for a 10-gal tank. Too many fish is stressful because of crowding and not enough air and too much ammonia in the water. Remember, not to many fish. It's not the number of fish you have, but the beauty of the environment you can provide for them and the safety of a good, clean, and well balanced eco system.

be very careful you dont over crowed your fish tank i would recommend some tetras or rosie barbs or maybe even some very small cichlids (peacock cichlids i think) but thats probably not likely

Hey, Sorry about your dead fish must be annoying! Sounds like you might be just getting whatever fish catches your eye tho! haha dont worry you can still get some really pretty fish. I would NOT get goldfish as they are coldwater so you cannot mix them with tropical fish and you need a 29 gallon just for 2 adults adult size is 6-8 inches for most of em'! plus there kinds gross and messy Anyways haha you could try some kuhli they get 4 inches and like to be together but i find they hide a lot! so might not see the loaches that much... You could get an african DWARF frog not the clawed one lol there cute! you can get them fo like 4 bucks A big gourami like say a gold or pearl gourami cannot live in that small of a tank.. not sure which kind you got but try maybe a dwarf gourami they get 3 inches and would be nice or a honey gourami. the dwarf would be 8 bucks or less. the honey not sure maybe like 5-10$$ maybe get some schooling tetras like glowlights or neons there pretty! probably 2 bucks each. and you should have a school of 5 or more for them so that might be all you could have with some loaches and maybe consider cory catfish again not that expensive like 5 maybe? you can check out any other options on this site : aqadvisor.com and play around with it! remember you should only have one inch of fish per gallon of water but that only accounts for fish not exceeding 2 inches ovb you cant have a 14 inch oscar in a 14 gallon tank! so just common sence and yeah good luck!

i would get a couple of male guppies there is a general rule of thumb 1" of fish per 1 gallon of water. so you could fit 5 guppies in there and that would be it! rams need at least 100 gallons, and gouramis need 20. loaches would be ok. you could get 2 NO GOLDFISH!!!!!!!! goldfish are VERY DIRTY animals and if you put any goldfish in there then you would be cleaning the tank literally every day. even with 1 goldfish. goldfish are different then most fish because they need at least 10 gallons of water for every 1" of fish b/c they are so dirty. guppies are usually around 3 bucks where i live. get males so they dont breed and they are prettier. if you want a change 2-3 mollies would be ok, or maybe some platies or swardtails. get some ghost shrimp or snails to help keep the bottom of your tank clean as loaches wont get the job done as well.. good luck!

Hate to point out the obvious, but after having so many fish die, have you considered the possibility that it might be due to operator error? "Gutting" it was a serious error, you basically had to start all over. That wasn't necessary. You cannot put any of the fish you listed in a 10 gallon tank. Maybe a few male Guppies, or a Betta (not both together). Before you even consider purchasing another fish, go to a book store or library and get some beginner's aquarium keeping books. Read them! You need to learn about cycling your tank, testing your water, and maintaining your tank. You need to learn how to create a hospitable environment for the fish you wish to keep. Without this knowledge, you might as well throw the tank away, you won't keep anything alive for long. Good luck.
