How many do species of birds live in the U.K?

Birds and Fishes together?

  • I have fishes and love birds( this is a common name used in the petshop). Now i am planning to construct a big cage( l x b x h=225 cm X 100 cm X 200 cm) for the birds. My earlier plan was to dedicate it to the birds and make green grass on the flooring. Now I am thinking about constructing a small pond which will use half of the ground area ( may be 125 cm X 100 cm and 100 cm depth) which will add the beauty. I am planning to have small live plants and beautiful fishes in that. I can fix the decoration tree, where the birds will sit most of the time, on the other half of the cage so that much waste meterials wont fall in the water. The pond may be useful for the birds also in summer season to take a cooling bathe. But i am not very confident about the plan. Whether it will create problems to the birds in the future or whether the fishes will survive? What are the points i need to attend in my design and construction? Which fish species are suitable for such a pond?

As long as you get small birds, I think you'll be okay... Small birds like finches and things wont eat large fish... For fish, I'd suggest Koi... They can grow fast and to about 3ft... You shouldn't have any problem as long as you get small birds (with small beaks) and fairly large fish. Koi are pretty cheap in terms of lifespan and color. You can get some really nice ones that are a couple inches for under $10.00 It's hard for me to understand how large this cage is going to because I don't ususally work with cms. You need a fairly large pond to keep koi in though. The larger the pond the bigger and faster they can grow. Make sure you construct a shallow part in your pond so the Koi can go up to it. Also, you will want a few groups of water plants. The water lilly is pretty common and looks good. Good luck. ---- I see you wrote lovebirds. I looked them up and they are pretty small as well. They probably wouldn't eat large fish.

The birds will probably eat the fish. Or, they will go to the bathroom in the fish's water and those toxins will kill them. It's best to keep them separate.

I'd probably worry about bird poo in the water and harming the fish. Some fish are pretty finicky about chemicals in their water. Koi might be ok, they're pretty hardy. Make sure you have aeration in your pond so the water doesn't get stagnant.

I would suggest Coy, and keep up on your filter system.

Sounds like a fantastic idea. I think that Koi and goldfish would be your best bet. They do well in ponds and are easy to care for. They also get quite large so birds couldn't eat them. The pond should be at least 2 feet deep in the center so fish have a deep space to hide. Can have a shallow side edge with rocks that the birds will enjoy. Don't forget that you will need a heat source for the birds. How did you come up with such a super idea. An aviary with a pond. Is this going to be connected to your house, wow is a great and expensive idea.

sounds great on paper, but i think you'll need a bigger cage for both to exist without problem,

Sounds wonderful, however Your fish pond will need to have a cover perhaps a clear plexaglass one that has a hinge on the top for cleaning and feeding. The bird droppings and scattered bird food may prove to be a slight problem. Also, a plexaglass cover sitting about 3-5 inches above the pond will also allow you to feed and clean your fish with ease. A filter located below the floor of the bird cage would be a bonus so you can now vary your fish. You will need to post pictures. Betta or a small goldfish would work to start. These are really your only two options for fish since you don't have a design for a filter or a heater. Guppies but they would be too small really to see. Good luck with your project. Koi are not an option here. They get entirely way too big. Perhaps if you have a filter a larger school of barbs. They kind of would add an amazon jungle thing to the cage.

Birds eat fish and their poop will fall in the pond and that will kill the fish.
