How do you get a Clown fish to eat?

Hello! I just got a clown fish a few days ago. He has yet to eat any food I've given him. What should I do?

  • He is a tomato clown fish. He's been in this new aquarium for almost three full days. The recommended food I'm trying to feed him is krill (the frozen food alternative.) I've heard that fish can be shy and not eat, but how long should that go on? Also, he seems to spend a lot of time at the bottom of the tank in the corner. The PH, salinity, nitrate/nitrite levels are all nearly perfect and the water temperature, along with my heater, is about 80 degrees. Am I doing something wrong? Is this normal behavior for a clown fish? Please help! Thanks!

    Being salwater fish, clowns are on the delicate side. Did you cycle your tank? What method of filtration are you using - wet/dry, LR, etc? You said your nitrate/nitrites are "nearly perfect" - what are the exact numbers? And how about ammonia? Do you have adequate tank decor for him to feel safe and secure? He may just be taking a few days to settle in. Give him a few more days, anyway, and let him acclimate.

Try some flake food or some blood worms. You might also see what live foods the pet store has. Unless it is ill in some way, it will eat eventually.

Yes, at this point, it is completely normal behavior. When we got a salt water aquarium in our office, I worked closely with the shop owner/keeper/maintenance guy. He gave me all instructions on feeding the fish and what to look for. Some fish take time to adjust to their surroundings, You should give a fish one week after introducing it to your aquarium to eat. Feed the frozen brine shrimp as the regular food and dried algae flakes as an afternoon treat. If it doesn't start eating after one week, you need to watch its behavior closely. If it doesn't eat after about 10 days, you need to seek advice from the aquarist you bought the fish from and start evaluating possible sicknesses.

My clowns adore algae wafers, perhaps try them. He probably is eating, when the lights are out and when you are asleep! Clowns are schooling fish so perhaps consier getting him a few tank mates (recommended 5 or 6 min);

Moving fish from place to place often gets them agitated and a feeling a unsettled. Your fish just needs to settle down into his new home. Plus, your fish may be eating the food that falls to the bottom of the aquarium without you seeing. It sounds like you are taking good care of your fish. Great job!!!!

blood worms or sinking pellets should do the trick. just wait for two more days , he will start eating rite.,

If he is young, try tearing the krill up into tiny pieces, if he still doesnt eat call the people at the pet store you got him and ask them what they were feeding him.
