How long does green algae grow?

How do I make algae GROW in my fish tank?

  • I recently bought a pleco (algae eater) fish, but I am concerned that it does not have enough food to survive. I know I can buy special algae eater food, but I would rather give the pleco natural algae. How can I feed my pleco?!

  • Answer:

If you want algae growth the bloke who said increase the light is correct. You don't need algae though, I feed mine weighted down cucumber, blanched peas and cabbage leaves. You have to cover them in boiling water to make them sink. If you visit your local veg shop, you can feed your plec for free with the stuff they throw out. It just has to be green and sink in most cases, but if the plec doesn't start munching on it inside 24 hours take it out and try something else. Mine love broccoli, but that turned the water green, but they and the Tiger Barbs have a thing for Savoy cabbage and that doesn't effect the water cos it gets eaten as soon as it goes in. All about trial and error :o)

Give your tank lots of light, and it will grow algae. But don't expect it to produce enough algae to keep your pleco fed. You will still need to feed it (a lot). Algae disks, sinking pellets, seaweed, lightly cooked green vegetables, are all good foods for plecos. A great many plecos starve in aquariums because their owners don't realize how much food they need. P.S. Leaving your light on 24 hours a day will grow more algae, but it will severely stress your fish. The tank light shouldn't be on for more than 10 to 12 hours per day.

Lots of sunlight will encourage algae growth.

You cant grow enough algae in a normal tank ot feed a pleco once it begins growing, and algae is not really a complete diet for them anyway. Supplement it's food with pieces of fresh vege and algae tablets. plus a bit of higher protien food like shrimp pellets. They will also eat any leftover food from the other fish. Plecos are not strictly algae eaters, they are omnivores and will eat practically anything, including algae.. Ian

Leave the light on 24 hours a day for a few days each week. Also....I had a huge pleco that started off in a tank with not much of a supply to. I was feeding my fish a general flaked food, so anything falling to the bottom was taken by the pleco....but to make sure he got something more, I would take a good sized pinch of flakes between my fingers, and hold it under the water surface for a second or two, pressing the water out of it so it would stick together in a clump. Once dropped to the bottom, he would be all over it. He did quite well...I had him as a baby essentially, and he was about 7" long when he died, a number of years later.

There will be algae that you cannot see. If you have had your tank for awhile the fish will find it. I don't recommend you trying to make algae grow because it can easily get out of control and kill other fish

you still have to supply algae pellets but make sure the tank gets lots of light. plecos also eat wood so add some aquarium driftwood

Fish Man!

it will be there if you won't clean your tank all the time, your pleco will eat it even it's invisible for you.
