Black spots showing up on my gold fish...?
-
I had bought some gold fish the other day and one is strictly gold and the other one is gold and white... Now Im starting to notice that there is black spots starting to show up on them. They are the feeder fish that we had originally introduced to the aquarium and then we put in a few days later the calico fan tails and regular fan tails and a few black moors. Im just wondering if the fish can change their coloring if there is other kids of fish in the tank? Or do you think that they are getting sick? They are swimming around like they are not but then again Im not a knowledgeable person with fish though. Any ideas or help would be great.

Answer:
Black spots on goldfish is a result of poor water quality being that the ammonia level in the aquarium has spiked. When the ammonia level in your tank increases it causes black spots to appear on the goldfish body and black tips to appear on the tail, pectoral fins and dorsal fins. These black spots are a result of ammonia burn. People should think of ammonia like acid, when the ammonia is extremely high it cause ammonia burn, just like acid would do to human skin. It causes discomfort in your goldfish and high levels of ammonia can kill your goldfish. As I've mentioned before people really need to take care of their goldfish properly. If you have an aquarium or goldfish bowl, you need to have water test kits around. This is a necessity if you plan on keeping your goldfish healthy and living a long life free of black spots.

The black spots are ammonia burns healing. This is due to not testing the water and doing a water change when needed. You really need to test the water for the results and stick to a 25% weekly water change. Don't worry however the black will go away. Sounds like poor water quality as was mentioned. Seriously test and do weekly water changes they should recover and be fine. Color should return in a few days to a week.

this happened to my goldfish once, and they are burns from the light. don't turn the light on in the fish tank, or around them, unless it is time to feed them. it also could be burns from the water. you have to let it sit in room temperature before you put them in it. make sure it is clean water. tap water isn't the best for them, it has chlorine in it.
