Why are my goldfish fins turning yellow?

I don't know what else to do for this extremely sick goldfish. help?

  • I rescued an 11 inch comet goldfish from a lady who had it in with her tropical fish. They were eating it's tail, and it got septicemia. It's fins were red with blood veins. I took it from her to rehabilitate it and put it in a pond in the spring where he belongs, but he has only gotten worse since I got him. He is in his own 20 gallon tank (yes, this is tight, but it's all I have, and he doesn't move much anyway), and I have tried three different antibiotics...the latest one being tetracycline. Nothing seems to be working, and the sides of his body are turning red, he has severe eye cloud, clamped fins, and body slime. I even raised the temperature of the tank to boost his immune system. All he does is sit in the corner and open and close his mouth all day. It's so sad; he looks AWFUL. I don't want Banjo to die. Please, does anyone have some last resort suggestions?

  • Answer:

if you aren't already, changing a few gallons as often as possible could help (on a 20... maybe 5 gallons twice/day, or even 2g 2-3 day) in addition to your regular water changes. sometimes when all else fails, constant fresh water is the best medicine (& prayer) (I'm not sure if a uv sterilizer would help in this situation, but if he is re-infecting himself at all, it might...) I hope he gets better!

What filtering do you have on that 20? if you can double it,that'll help with oxygen :) For my guys when they ever came to me with septicemia I used a mix of maracyn and maracyn 2. These two, will work together to fight off positive and negative grams... Which Banjo needs. The eye cloud is from infection, which maracyn will help. Clamped fins are a sign of sickness often then not, and the body slime is his body's defense to being sick. If you can, garlic guard if he will eat... and yes like the other answer said slime coat strengthener.... good luck! That poor goldie...

Sky

Hm. Not good. Have you tried using any commercial slime coat strengthener? That might help. But for right now, just sit tight. Time is the best medicine.

Max

Try fin rot medication too. Sadly, it's not good to take sick fish out of sympathy. He has probably already cost you alot of money! You can get water conditioners and different medicine that helps replace slime coat. He could be getting fungus and the eye is called cloudy eye and could be varitions of others. All this medication you need to buy will cost you alot of money! Do daily water changes and make sure the filter is on full blast.

Freedom

It's a fish on its death gravel bed. Throwing money at it won't change the outcome.
