What type of fish is this?
-
We have had this fish about 6 months and we cannot tell what type of fish he is. He is dark green with black stripes but sometimes his stripes dissapear for a while. He is the biggest fish in our tank and takes that to his advantage at sometimes picks on other fish like our angel fish who is just a bit smaller than him. We need to know what type of fish he is so we can see what fish would be suitable to put in with his type. Also if you know any ideas how to prevent him bullying other fish please say so he is really nasty to some and in the past has resulted in their death. Answer:
I think the others are right. I don't know anything about that species, but I've had Oscars and they are related. Mine ate everything in the tank, and were very mean to each other. They would fight madly, to the point where one of them ended up with what appeared to be a broken jaw. Not saying this guy is going to do all that, but that's how his cousins behaved. Now you know what he is, definitely do a bit of research. Some basic links: http://www.aquariumlife.net/profiles/south-american-cichlids/green-severum/100020.asp http://badmanstropicalfish.com/profiles/profile22.html http://www.worldcichlids.com/fishprofiles/severums.html http://badmanstropicalfish.com/profiles/profile22_comment.html And I think forums are useful, a lot of knowledgeable and fish-passionate people are on them: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/index.php

He definitely does look like a cichlid. They are very aggressive fish. If you have cichlids I would stick mostly to other cichlids.

Hi It's a green Severum
fishbarn
this definitely looks like a severum cichlid. you may want to look up what this fish is compatible with and if it is aggressive

Its a green serveum for sure. Yes green servums only have the stripes showing when he is stressed, when calm they disappear. He will pick on other fish and should have a 55 gallon to himself. I have a green and a gold servum and they can only be in a tank by themselves. They like the chiclid pellets and mine eat ghost shrimp and feeder goldfish.

that is indeed a severum.. keep with larger fish like silver dollars, leoprinus, smaller/tamer cichlids, giant danios, medium sized gouramis. etc.. in a 75+ gallon tank
