How often do female bettas have eggs?

My bettas bred last night, I saw the eggs in the nest, today i see the nest but I dont see eggs..?

  • Im just wondering if the eggs could still be there? If they are not wouldnt the nest have been destroyed as well? The nest is still in tact! And the male seems to be tending to it!

  • Answer:

If the eggs are still there you'll see them. He moves them around alot. Look closely where he is spending most his time under the nest (I'm sure you already have). If you are not seeing any eggs then he ate them. Look at his stomach. Is it larger? If it is I recommend not feeding him until the eggs have been pooped out. If he is eating them there may be only a handful left, there may be none left. It's my belief they eat them because they realize at some point the eggs are not fertilized and they're trying to protect the remaining eggs from rot/fungus. Unfertilized eggs are from him being inexperienced or too old. Betta fathers are incredibly devoted and I don't believe what some say in forums that the father ate the eggs because he was hungry or a bad father. Even if you're sure there aren't any eggs left you can just leave him be to tend the empty nest until he tires of it then let him rest up and recondition with high protein foods before trying to breed again.
