What tank is better for my betta fish?

What other fish can be in the same tank as a Betta?

  • I have a male Japanese Siamese Fighting fish (Betta) and I know other male Bettas can't be kept with them. His large tank looks so empty. I saw on the internet where you can put Platies and Guppies with a Betta. I just wanna get 1 or 2 maybe 3 more small fish so the tank doesn't look so empty. I don't want big fish obviously being a smaller tank and I don't want them eating my Betta! Has anyone ever put other fish in a tank with a Betta before??? If so what kind and how did it work out???

  • Answer:

Siamese fighting fish cannot be kept together on most conditions, but can be kept with other fish. You just have to choose tank mates carefully, and know how aggressive he is. I've had a super chill make before, wouldn't hurt anybody, but had a female who didnt like guppies! I'm guessing you cycled the tank right? I don't know how large the tank is so I cannot give a deffinate answer. If its 5 gallons then only shrimp or a snail. If it is ten gallons or more, a small school of tetras (at least five); cherry barbs are great, I had some with my males and females, corydoras, some live bearers (he might nip guppies, and some such as swordtails get pretty big). I'm not saying you can put all these fish together in the same tank! Avoid anything that nips fins (never get tiger barbs), are in the same family as bettas (gouramis) have long fins, or territorial fish. Do a little research with any fish you like :)

Hello, Bettas have their own personalities. Some are more aggressive than others. I have 4 aquariums, one is a 20 gallon long. I keep a betta in their with some glo fish and some neon tetras. They have been getting along fine for 2 and a half years now. I also have a 40 gallon breeder with a bunch of other fish including glofish and neon tetras. I added a different betta in their and it would go after anything that moved, so I had to move him immediately. He now has a 10 gallon tank all to himself. I don't even consider that an aquarium because he's only him in there, so it just feels like I have 4. That being said you just have to be a bit patient and watch it after you add it to the aquarium. Hope this helps.

The 5 gallon tank is out of the question, no way. But for a ten gallon that could work rather nicely, just make sure you have a heater to keep the water on the warm side and a good filtration system, and don't forget to use dechlorinator! 7 times out of 10 the betta is chill enough to be kept with other fish, as long as you put the betta in last. Don't forget to cycle the second tank before you put fish in, here are some options- The Betta 3 Platies OR 5 Neon Tetras 3 Corydoras Catfish (the smaller variaties, like the panda cory)

It would depend on the size of the tank. A 5 gallon you could have a snail. A 10 gallon you could have either Dwarf Rasbora or pygmy Cory's But tank size would help.

In the 5 gal, nothing really. Inverts like a snail or some shrimp maybe. In a 10gal you have some options. Things to consider. No fish that even look like another betta. (Gourami etc) Nothing with really long fins (Fancy guppies) Nothing aggressive or known for fin nipping (tiger barbs etc) They are likely to attack a betta. Look for peaceful short finned community fish. Neons tetras, platies, White Cloud Minnows ( as long as you a careful with the temperature) and small bottom dwellers like Panda Corys or Kuhli loaches. It also depends on the temperament of the betta, some will live with many different fish, others are more bad tempered, but in a big enough tank the other fish will just keep their distance. Ian
