What else can I put with my betta?

What can I put in a 20 gallon tank with a betta?

  • (Hopefully) getting a betta soon, and it'll be going in either a 5, 10, or 20 gallon tank. Obviously in the 5 gallon it would be the only thing there, but could I put anything else with the betta in a 20 gallon (other than shrimp, etc.) Also, would anything be able to go in a 10 gallon with it? Thanks

  • Answer:

In my tank with my male betta I have neon tetras, cory catfish, plecos, glofish(not goldfish), zebra danios. You can put any other type of small non-agressive fish in with the betta. Make sure the fish don't nip fins though, keep an eye on them for a little while.

betta fish are aggressive. i wouldnt put them with other fish, for they will most likely chase and bite at the other fish's fins. also, a betta can stress out other fish, and that could kill the other fish.

I highly advise going to aqadvisor.com to get a good idea. It'll factor in the tank size and filter you plan on using. And it'll warn you about incompatible species. Just avoid fish that are too colorful or have long fins. Aggressive betta will mistake them for another male with dire consequences. Many people put in tetra. Bloodfin tetra are good option, as they tend to be hardier than other tetra. Tetra can be a little... difficult to keep. :) I know that White Cloud Mountain Minnow are a very popular choice because of their less flashy coloring and peaceful attitude. People add dull-colored feeder guppies and dull-colored platys, too. Snails and shrimp and african dwarf frogs are common companions as well. I don't advise fancy guppies, danios (this includes glofish), or mollies. There's a good chance that fighting will break out. But it just really depends on the betta's personality. My little guy is very peaceful, and he has a 20-gallon, well-planted and decorated tank with two filters. The water tends to be hard and a little alkaline. So he gets along with my 5 Dalmation Mollies (who love the water) splendidly. He spends the day pretending they're not there. :)

Not

You could have a school of neon tetras :P They don't usually bother the fighting fish when they are in a school and they are fast enough so that the fighter can't nip them. But basically you could have a range of fish just not anything that is colored similarly to a fighting fish or has long fins as the fighter with confuse the fish to be one of its own and attack it :P

Depending on the gender, males are better off with out being with other fish (they can be aggressive) but females can be with other females or other fish! I have a female bette and two guppies in a ten gallon! On Yahoo you will get alot of people telling you that bettas can NOT be with any other fish, sometimes that is true, others it is not! I recommend doing some research maybe! Sorry if I am not that much of a help!! Good Luck
