What fish could I put together?

What fish can you put together with a male betta fish?

  • ok...i want a SIMPLE answer to this queston please:) i am NOT a fish expert. i also want to know where you can get the cheapest fish. THANK YOU!!!!!!!

  • Answer:

I'm not sure why people are saying you can't keep bettas with other fish. You can, if your betta is peaceful and you are careful with your stocking. Some bettas will hate company, others will accept it very happily. Totally unsuitable tankmates: - nippy fish (no tiger barbs, serpae tetras, zebra danios etc) - cichlids (that includes angelfish) - fish with different temperature requirements (no goldfish) - fish that may resemble other bettas (guppies, anything with long flowy tails or fins) - fish that will eat the betta (no pirahnas) - no other anabatoids (bettas and gouramis) Things that will help make it work: - add the other fish first, so the betta is not used to thinking of the tank as his or her territory - if the betta is already in there, start with bottom dwellers, which the betta will not consider a threat - make sure the tank is big enough! Don't try combining a betta with any fish in under a 10 gallon, and avoid anything but bottom dwellers in less than 15 gallons - plant it heavily or have many decorations so that the fish can get away with each other - keep the tank understocked. The fewer fish, the better it will go. I'm sorry the answer is not really simple, but bettas are all very different from each other. Some are peaceful and shy, others are really aggressive. That's part of the charm - they are very individual. Bear in mind that the cheapest fish shop may not always be the best. In a private shop you may have to pay more, but the fish may be healthier. Of course, sometimes the opposite is true. Shop around to find a place that takes good care of their fish and where all the fish look healthy. That's more important than price. Good luck! :)

First - you want a tank up around 10 gal or so. The smaller "betta tanks" are barely big enough for a betta alone. Assuming you have the space, small community fish like Neons, platies etcs should be fine. Most small bottom dwellers like Cory catfish, small plecos, small loaches etc are fine. Ian

In a 15 gallon, you can have 3 platies with him. In a 10 gallon, you can keep some shrimp or 2 mystery snails. You can even have some shrimp and a mystery snail. Not that many options in a 10 gallon. In a 5 gallon, shrimp only. Below 5 gallons, nothing. The minimum for a Betta fish is 5 gallons filtered and heated. NO: Danio's Tetra'a Mollies Guppies (fancy or not) The Danio's and Tetra's need 20 gallons minimum and groups of 6. They are also very active and will stress the Betta out. Mollies have larger tails, and they need salt in their water because they are brackish water fish, not freshwater fish. Guppies have to long of tails, even non-fancies. And the fancies hove to bright of color. Cory cats are a good choice, but need 20 gallons minimum and groups of 6. The only ones that can go in a 10 gallon is pygmy Cories, and they are kind of hard to find. Dojo loaches need 30 gallons minimum and groups of 3 minimum. They get around 10 inches long. Kuhli loaches are around 4 inches and also need groups, and do better in a 15 gallon minimum.

Dont be stupid

Any peaceful tropical community fish can be kept with betta fish. Naturally, exclude any potential fin-nippers like tiger barbs or cichlids. Pet shops and fish shops are the best place to get fish if you're getting them locally. True, places like Walmart have them a little cheaper, but much higher likelihood of them introducing deseases to your tank.

You can put any small, peacefull fish of roughly the same size with a Bettas as long as the tank is heated. The people who say you can't jeep opther fish with Bettas are amateurs who don't know what they are talking about. you can keep Aangelifish and Discus with Bettas. A number of people do.There are no fish you can add to a Betta bowl.. Bettas should not be kept in bowls to begin with. The one tank exception are ananbantid fish- Gouramis- as they are closely related enough to bettas to start a fight. you should also not put nipping tetras with Bettas. The Lemon tetra is a good peaceful choice, so are Dojo loaches, Weather loaches, and Cory catfish. Also White Cloud Mountain Minnows as long as the tank is 74 degrees or less. The cheapest fish are usually at Petco, however, they are also the least healthy., as no one as petco knows how to care for them. So if you buy a fish at petco, make sure they are eating and that there are no sick or dead ones in their tank. Walmart is the same or worse. Do not buy fish from tanks that have a few sick fish in them. Neon Tetra Disease is going around and can attack fish other than neons, and is incurable.

If the fish is not Aggressive , or particularly bright and colorful (like big tail). It'll probably get attack. Unless its a big fish. If the fish IS aggressive, but its not another Betta. The Betta will get slaughtered. If it is a Betta (regardless of gender) They'll be a fight.

depending on ur tank size, you can get many fish. right now, i have a blue ram and 12 cardinal tetras with my betta. they seem to get along. my blue rams a jerk once in a while but i haven't seen any nipped fins in my betta yet.. neon tetras would go great with a betta. just make sure the fish aren't aggressive/semi aggressive. they should be small and peaceful. dwarf gouramis would prolly be great as well..
